Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
You better hurry up and go. I was up at Manker today, and the snow players were hauling the snow away by the truck load.

Winter Boots
Anyone have any recommendations for winter mountaineering boots for use in the local mountains and fall/spring in the sierras? There is such a wide variety and prices. I think plastic is overkill for the local mountains, and 400+ $$$ on a synthetic boot seems crazy.

What is the standard? I think I usualy track 7.6 to 7.8AlanK wrote:On the other hand, for years the standard distance (e.g., in handouts from the USFS) listed for the Vivian Creek hike up San Gorgonio was short by over a mile.

San G summit camp
Hiked up to the summit of San Gorgornio yesterday afternoon. I got to the summit as the sun was setting. Set up camp in one of the rock shelters, ate dinner and relaxed. Got up early to watch the sunrise then I packed up and was back at the car by 11. The weather was surprisingly calm and mild. No w...

Re: Dollar Lake, San Gorgonio Wilderness
You could camp at dry lake and get water from Lodgepole Spring. SGWA reports: Good flow for about 50' before disappearing into the sand. Some pools deep enough to filter. 2008-10-10 Dollar Lake reports Dry but still good flow on the Spring. 2008-09-20. I would take the South Fork side, but call the ...

correct. just leave it on while you are hiking and it will draw a track of where you went. I find they are more accurate if i strap it to the outside of my pack.

AW, we carried 3 liters each. There was water all over, but I wasn't sure what you can and cant drink there because of the geothermal stuff.

Yellowstone
I went to Yellowstone for the first time last month. The only peak I hiked was Mt. Washburn. It was an easy walk up a fire road but the view from the top was unlike anything I have ever seen. There is a fire look out on top and there is unobstructed view in all directions. I really wanted to do Elec...

Extreemly dangerous unpredictable brown bear in Glendora

I was doing pine and dawson last deer season and we could hear gun fire but not see the hunters. On the way back we finally saw them( and their illegal camp fire) Its kind of scary when you can hear shots and not tell where they are coming from.

Re: Probably a Stoooopid Question
I agree with taco. I just use a cheap rain shell. As long as I keep the wind of my legs I am warm enough while I am moving or taking a short break ( at least around here). If its really cold or i am at camp I wear or bring long underwear and/or some fleece pants i picked up at Old navy for 20 bucks. .

Re: Mt. Wilson Trail burn area: 05-18-2008
I noticed that house yesterday on my hike. The people that own those homes are nuts. Constant danger of fire, flood, mudslide and rock fall.
It looked like the fire dept cut a line along the ridge at first water, and that is about where the burn area ended.

Mt. Wilson
Went up the mt wilson trail today. We started at 6 and made the top by 9:30. This was my first time on this trail an I think it would be a lot better in the winter or fall. Temps were perfect on the way up, but the gnats and mesquites were out of control. We sat around until 10 when the gate opened ...

I got one of these EMS packs last year . you cant try them on because they are on the east coast (unless you want to pay return shipping), but for the $$$ you cant beat it. They are basically Greggory knock offs.

good story friendowl. sounds like a good program. my first "hike" was under similar circumstances. i was just a few weeks past my 18th birthday and got into some trouble. when i got out i had no money and no one would pick up my collect calls, so i walked from fontana to chino hills. (abou...
