Mount Fuji

Having seen pictures of Japan’s Mount Fuji, it was a peak I had always wanted to climb. Well I finally got the chance when I was in the country last week. Fuji at 12385’ is the highest Peak in Japan, it’s located about 60 miles from Tokyo and it took me two trains, one taxi and one bus ride to arriv...

Re: Pine Mountain Success, Dawson Failure

Nice pics/report Uncle Rico, That must have been a RELIEF finding a potty, no seriously, that's a great hike, but your right driving up that road really messes up the car, still it's worth the price of a car wash to do it.

Water on Twin Peaks Trail

Spence and I hiked up twin Peaks and Waterman on Saturday (7/27), and I thought it was worth a mention that the spring on the trail to Twin Peaks Saddle seemed to be flowing fairly well, considering the dry year that we have had. The Sierra Club were also on the mountain, having a gathering/event up...

Re: Have you ever seen a rattlesnake in Icehouse Canyon?

Yeah, have seen several in that area, but, particularly around the bottom of Falling Rock Cyn, I recall one that I could hear from at least 50' away, don't know if it was me approaching or if an animal had spooked it to rattle like that, still I appreciated the warning.

That's an informative report Mattcav, to be honest I had not heard of the Upper Reyes Trail before, is there an Upper Reyes Peak? if so how far out from the trailhead is it?

Re: Beyond Rattlesnake

I stuck as close to the spine as possible, dropping to one side or the other to navigate around the rock outcrops as they occurred, I don't recall anything more than 3rd class rock scrambling and topped out maybe 30/40 feet to the left (northish) of the summit.

Re: Beyond Rattlesnake

Sean, I agree with the descent route (in red), but, personally prefer to stay on top of the ridge and head straight up to the summit on the ascent.
The rocks on that ridge did'nt bother me and staying out of the trees helped to keep me on track especially with the evening drawing in.

Re: Beyond Rattlesnake

Good report Sean, Looks like much of the brush/bushes have been burned away on that section beyond the first bump after Rattlesnake, hopefully its made the going a little easier. Glad you had the experience to pick a good exit route off of S Hawkins when your water ran out, that would have been a ki...

Lone Pine Peak

Having a few days off this week I headed up to the Sierras. First on my list was Lone Pine Peak, it's prominent peak is often mistaken by unfamiliar travelers as Mount Whitney, and, at 12944' high definitely worth bagging. Setting off at dusk (06/05/2013) I headed up the Meysan Lakes Trail for about...

Nice pics Uncle, looks like you had a beautiful day out there, especially coming from Dawson Saddle. It sucks that people are removing the trail registers, it was there a year ago(as shown below). I think I will get in the habit of always carrying a spare notebook in my pack to replace missing logs....

Hi MattCav, Glad you made it back to the car OK, sorry that your trip did not work out as planned, but I'm glad you had the good sense to make the right decision, and that, you should feel good about. I had a similar experience once when I drove all night to get to the Sierras and started hiking wit...

Re: Tom Harrison - Baldy Map?

I go along with that HJ, and personally, I have always felt that USGS 7.5 topos are the favourite when off trail or in remote areas. At about 6/7 bucks apiece thats cheap insurance for something that can get you out of a though situation. Of course, you also need the orientation skills to go with it...

It always surprises me how much history is in our mountains.

Hi Bonan, Thanks for the great report, glad you had a good time. I was up there on Saturday and conditions were pretty much as you described except that on the summit there was no wind at all just blue skies. That changed on the way down as a few clouds rolled in. The snow was fairly consolidated so...

I noticed a few months back that all the register/log boxes between San Bernadino Peak and Charlton Peak had the lids ripped off and the log-in books were torn up, I don't know whats up with some people, tearing down the wind shelters on Baldy is real antisocial behaviour, I wonder if they are the s...

As of Saturday(9/29/2012) there was still water flow from the stream at the Ski Hut, there was also water flow from the little streams just below the Hut, but I would wait until you get to the Ski Hut to filter your drinking water.

Nice pics, yeah you got into some serious hiking/bushwacking there. The ridge you pointed out Rattlesnake to South Hawkins has taken some major burns over the years as has much of the area, with the lack of tree cover it can get pretty hot hiking some of those areas.
