Re: East Barton Flats to Grinnell Ridge Camp

Did a variation of Jim's hike listed above and it's a perfect loop. Park at the start/ top of the abandoned dirt road West of Lost Creek. Ez descent to Lost Creek, then about 30- 40 minutes x-c up to Lost Creek Trail, Grinnell Ridge Camp, Slushy/ S Fork Meadows trail and down to Poopout Hill. Key he...

Re: Do you have a secret peak or place in the wilderness?

OK- here is a real life secret spot. Hike downstream from Chilao's Meadow Group Campground (it's the ENE Fork of Alder Creek). Perhaps 50- 100 yards downstream from the Sandy Bottom Boulders (top-roping and bouldering) is a huge (50' high?) boulder on the south side of the stream. It's summit is eas...

Re: Do you have a secret peak or place in the wilderness?

ya Brown's Flat! Island in the sky. Middle of nowhere. Old photos of people flying a small plane there to a small resort in the 20's. I used to like the old cabin above Orchard Camp in the mid 70's. People knew about it, but it was still cool. Homeless Charlie Manson-types would hang there. Ditto Ch...

Re: Question about Mtn Bikers on SG trails

Great thread!! Great responses. Except I question the "50% plus pass me at max velocity ".. statement I hike.. a lot. I ride a long travel bike. So I straddle the fence. As I hiker, in the last 4- 5 years have had no bad bike experiences. And trust me, I'll go aggro if it happens... As a r...

what Hiking Jim said...

Coldwater Canyon was a great place to hike through. I'd do loop trips taking the Heaton Canyon trail.... would camp maybe 1/2 mile above Widman Ranch under some great oaks and go up to the old mines and San Antonio Ridge...

Wow!!! That takes me back... from '75 to '80 I went into Coldwater Canyon and up the the Gold Dollar Mine and San Antonio Ridge once or twice a year. The trail from the saddle to Coldwater Canyon was never that sketchy- but i recall one dangerously exposed spot. No doubt it's worse. The use trail to...

You know, I think I remember your exact car. If it's the one I'm thinking of, nice car. How far did you hike on Windy Gap? My car was a black Audi A4 S Line w bike racks.. i waved or gave a gentle honk. We did not hike too far up trail. Couple miles; maybe half-way to Windy Gap. Was the fiance's 1s...

Re: Mt Lowe, San Gabriel Peak, Mueller Tunnel - Storm - 3/17/12

Rallison- pretty stout conditions for a snow ride. I was in a black Audi driving down and saw you riding uphill a couple miles below Crystal Lake. I actually thought you were a madman who started down in Azusa or Glendora. Starting from above West Fork only confers 1/2 madman status.. I got a flat t...

Taco- more often than not, the farms are tucked away off the beaten path? Exception being the Bear Creek farm ranger claimed was 40 yards off the trail (he actually could smell pot from the trail is how he found it).

Mangus- saw you packing up in the parking lot that Sat AM .. me and fiance rode up West Fork to Glen Camp. Ranger told me they found a big pot plantation up Bear Canyon 2 months ago. Busted 2 Mexican nationals, too. Was only 40 yards off the trail. Darwin award for those guys. But scary, too. Imagin...

Went down Vincent Gulch Saturday PM. Spent the night close to the East Fork/ San Gab River.

Just a reminder to all- it is awfully nice down there. Nobody is hiking up from Azusa. Nobody coming down from Cabin Flats, and nobody on the Vincent Gulch trail = nice and empty wilderness.

Acorn- thanks for the positive ID. Forgot to mention size-- pancake width (8") piled high with the toppings (3"). No surprise tho. San Gab bears love the suburbs. Below is Monrovia, CA's Sampson the Hot Tub. Immortalized by renowned local artist Lynn Fearman for the Monrovia Public Library...

Hi- the FA guys were Keith Cunning and Ed Kaufer ("the Uplanders").
There were a score of "Uplanders" who all climbed together in the late 70's- was Rick one of them?

VERY cool you found the Cascade Canyon crags. My friends who developed lots of the routes there ('78, '79) were excellent climbers and were psyched with the fun they were having. But the approach is a hump (i turned back the one time i tried- my wife got sick of the bushwhack...). So the routes fell...

Have been a San Gabs hiker since '70, trail runner since '80 and mt biker since '85... so i get it This spring I was riding up Upper Winter Creek-some downhillers came around a corner with a bit too much speed. LD, There are some sport routes in Cascade Canyon from the 80's. That's what I was looking for, though I think they're lower, as I doubt the climbers accessed via Ontario. Routes on the North Side of Cascade Canyon were accessed from below- though the one time I went looking for them with wife in t...

Mt Pinos.

1/2 mile up the "dirt road" is above treeline in places and has gentle rolling hills for tele practice. Right after a storm the tree skiing in all directions is endless, too..

DON'T practice at the Quarry. Loose on top. High risk of knocking rocks. Even on a weekday or if you are "off to the side".

Good luck with your training.
