Re: Baldy holiday

Those use trails have been there for some years. It is not the winter hikers, rather the way up is not clear so everyone just takes what seems to make sense. The rain this year eroded them a bit though. How did you get 5372' of elevation gain on a trail that starts at 6160 and ends at 10050? I don't...

Cactus to Clouds virgin no more

I have been talking about doing this for a long time. My buddy Pat and I set out yesterday morning from Palm Springs (I'm sure you have seen lots of pictures so I'll post mine here only if requested). We left the museum at 2:30 a.m. It was already warm and we were glad we did not leave any later. Th...

San Jacinto via Deer Springs

Yesterday (5/21) I hiked San Jacinto from the Deer Springs trailhead. The route was up to the PCT, across to Marion Mountain trail, up to the summit, down the Wellman Trail, Wellman Cienega to the Strawberry Junction trail and back to Deer Springs. 20 miles, 5,500' elevation gain. I was doing some c...

Mt St Helens

Climbed Mt St Helens with my daughter and friends yesterday. We did not know that there is a tradition of climbing in dresses on Mother's Day weekend so we were treated to hikers in outrageous attire. The Monitor Ridge route was closed because of snow on the route up to Climber's Bivouac so we had t...

PCT Mile 347 to 369 May 11

This is one of the dry sections of the PCT. We did a car shuttle with James starting at 369 and hiking down and Alan and I doing the 5,700' ascent to the car. The trail is easy to follow and it makes for a really nice day of hiking. There is a burn area populated by the Poodle to watch out for. You ...

Re: Agua Tibia Loop

The path to the summit of Agua Tibia was completely overgrown and indistinct. I would have had to bushwack and there was enough poodle-dog that i decided against it.

The Wild Horse trail is in very good shape. The only part of the loop that is not is the Palomar Magee trail.

Agua Tibia Loop

Last week I decided to try this one. I had been the length of the Dripping Springs Trail before (7 mi) but the rest was new to me. The entire loop is supposed to be between 19 and 20 miles, but you have to park your car .4 mi away so it is more like 20.5 mi. Unfortunately no pictures this time. From...

Santa Rosa Peak

On the way to Indian Wells last week I decided to stop for a hike in the Santa Rosa mountains. The book said Santa Rosa peak was a good one. Distance (book 16 mi -- actual 19 mi), time 7.5 hours, elevation gain 4,000'. Water, some. The hike starts at a well marked parking lot off of the 78. https://...

Bear Flat Trail to Baldy and West Baldy is open once again...it is still a mess on the fire denuded steep climb above Bear Flat, but it was always a pain to push up that anyway.

Re: Bear Flat Trail (Baldy Village)

Ditto on Bear Flat Trail -- any word yet?

A good substitute to get ready for Whitney is San Bernardino Peak. You need to get a permit, but the peak is not well visited so that is usually not a problem.

Does anyone know if the Bear Flat trail is open yet?

San Jacinto via Devil's Slide

Hiked up on Friday. The weather was amazing, blue sky and a light wind until topping out. I left Humber Park at 10:00 a.m. A little late but thought I would give it a go. The trail was mostly clear until just below Saddle Junction. At that point I put mini-spikes on and continued. There were places ...

Backbone Trail

Yesterday we decided to avoid the rain and snow and hike a segment of the backbone trail out of Yerba Buena. The beginning of the hike was up the Sandstone Peak trail and into the misty clouds. About half way up it cleared and the day was a mixture of sun and high clouds. From the peak we dropped do...

I climbed Cucamonga on the 27th. There was lots of snow and icy snow from the Saddle all the way up. I put my crampons on about 10 minutes below icehouse Saddle. There were spots between Icehouse Saddle and Cucamonga Saddle where they were definitely a good idea, and spots where they munched in the ...

Re: My first Whitney ascent. Seeking experience and advice.

I would plan on a scouting trip first. Start with a day hike as high as daylight permits. Then follow with going to Trail Camp and after you have that experience (as well as some practice on the chute) think about an ascent. In the winter you can't really go up the trail so there is a steep snow chu...

I wonder if that means the bear flat trail is going to open up sooner since the administration of the trail has now changed?
