Re: Nate Freund (lost guy) & Personal Locator Beacons (PLB's

I just researched and realized that the annual subscription fee is only for the low cost unit ( http://www.rei.com/product/766529 ). If you buy the expensive unit ( http://www.rei.com/product/709917 ) you don't have this fee but just need to fork out upwards of $500. I also read the reviews on the c...

Re: Nate Freund (lost guy) & Personal Locator Beacons (PLB's

I wouldn't mind having the security of a PLB if things got really bad and I absolutely needed it, however the cost at this point is the deterrent. The initial costs have come down a lot, and you can get a unit for $150 or less, but the $100/year subscription gets me. I would like it better if you co...

Do y'all figure that the snow will have consolidated enough to be safe this weekend? I want to get up the Baldy Bowl but only if it is safe to do so.

thanks,

but it is probably lookin like a little too much snow to attempt the north side of Harwood as early as Sunday, doesn't it? Especially without snowshoes. I saw some nice snowshoes in the REI clearnace bin in Arcadia for $100.

I'd stay low, personally. Postholing gets old fast. 8) That said, if we don't get a ton, I might try a new thing on Mt Harwood from the North side on the 26th if you were interested. Do you ever snowshoe? I don't own any but wouldnt mind renting a pair and giving them a shot. It has been many years...

for some reason I found that the links for specific events on ODC usually don't work, if not you need to go back to the calendar for Southern California and look up the trip on Feb.16th. "Three day two night winter backbacking trip in San Gorgonio" Or Maybe this one works? http://www.outdo...

what would be a good hike for this weekend 1/27/08?

It looks like we are getting snow and going to get more. I heard up to 2 ft in the Baldy area. We were thinking about hiking up the bowl, but it looks like there will be too much snow and avy conditions. What do you figure would be a good hike? Stay at lower elevation until the snow consolidates a l...

Re: San Sevaine Lookout and Buck Point

yes, the buckthorn was the biggest downside of this hike. I wore thick pants which helped, but I did feel a little like a pin cushion and had to pull out a thorn stuck in my leg. With a little trimming and some cairns making the detours this could be a nice route. However, I don't see myself going u...

I really love the idea of climbing Baldy's north face, but also fall into the catergory of lacking gear and experince. I have never done any mixed climbing with a rope or pro. I am comfortable on sustained 3rd class unroped with sections of 4th class. I have only used ice axe and crampons a couple t...

San Sevaine Lookout and Buck Point

On Sunday 1-20-08 Tom, Augie and I climbed San Sevain LO and Buck Point via the ridge ascending from the North end of Etiwanda Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga. It was great. The ridge/fire break was a little bushy, but most could be detoured around and did not cause too much pain. Once we made it to the fi...

Or, one could do a theoretical "Mountaineer's 3-T's", by heading up Icehouse to the base of Timber's West Ridge, go up that to the summit, go down the North Ridge, then directly up the South Ridge of Tele, then down Tele's West Ridge, and up Thunder's East Ridge, and the fun part being de...

Looks like a great climb! How come you decided not to climb the North-West route off the the ACH? Is that the location where the road is washed out that you originally planned on climbing? I am envious, I have not used crampons this year (doesn't help that they were stolen, but as soon as I have a r...
