Re: Baldora (or is it Widco?)
Nice exploration :) In regards to the trail you saw, there was an old trail from Coldwater canyon up to Big Horn Ridge as mention by John Robinson in his book. In fact, one of the old historical maps of the area (really cool maps btw, have more information than current) details the "Highline Tr...

Re: Bear Creek via Smith Saddle 3/23/15
Ze, thanks for the feedback. I don't know if any of these are reasonable alternatives to an unreasonable destination. Haha. Can you tell from the yellow line if the top of the scree slope, where it hits the ridge, is past the drop down point for the final gully? I can't tell if the path is straight...

Re: Bear Creek via Smith Saddle 3/23/15
The ridge at my 'fast' pace (when I'm alone) is around 10-11 hours. I can't imagine the blue line (even more cross country) is a faster route! I am curious about yellow though. I think that has the best shot (or some variation).

Re: Iron Mountain's North Ridge
Dude! Big Horn Ridge will be hard of course (dealing with the brush / route finding up to 6300', then just grind it out) but after that you need a real challenge :) You need to do the San Gabriel Triple Crown all in one continuous hike. 1. Baldy (the King) 2. Baden-Powell (the Queen) 3. Iron Mountai...

Nice! Brutal route too. I know the feeling of missing a piece and having to go back. You should try it from Heaton Flat next time and hit up Baldora / Widco & Eagle Mines as well.
I think the cabin ruins are a bit off from the cables, to the northwest of the lower cable terminus.

Re: Waterman, Twin Peaks, & Triplet Rock via Buckhorn Campgr
Very nice! Did you scramble up the first block and sign the register (if it's still there)? Curious how many signatures it has now. Edit: Also I noticed on the way back you avoided going all the way back up to Twin Peaks and tried to hit the saddle directly. I remember those gullies and terrain on t...

Re: Bear Creek via Smith Saddle 3/23/15
Did you ever consider one of the northern gullies leading to notches in the ridge between East Twin and Triplet? Some of the gullies look almost entirely brush free, or at least of a more piney vegetation type, but they're steep as an avalanche chute, probably loose and deadly treacherous. Then aga...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions
Hello fellow SGMDFers,
Going to be in town this weekend and of course have to take an excursion into my old stomping grounds. Will be heading up Baldy Saturday morning with a few old hiking-mates. Feel free to join us or maybe I'll see you out on the trail.
Joe

Re: The last unsolved problems of the SG's!
If you didnt mind going on a long hike, you could create a loop by descending from SA ridge down Coldwater canyon to a waterfall(I suspect) and then returning up to Big Horn ridge....that would be like 10,000ft gain hehehe. Finding the old "mile-high" trail, or parts of it, would be cool....

Tim, wasn't this the day you realized (when back at the trailhead) you left your GPS on the peak and hiked back up to get it? lol

Thanks everyone! The recovery time did take longer but I'm feeling good. This is the most motivated I've felt in a while. Nice try. I mean bagging the "big 3" in one go is a feat in itself!
Do you not prefer to start "later" (say 3 am) and get 5-6 hours of sleep, in order to take advantage of the cooler temps?

Fight On's poor navigation abilities, poor stamina, and OCD nature really limits where he can go.blueshammer wrote: ↑I'm amazed you were able to pinpoint the peak from just looking at a few rocks -- that is, unless you were the culprit responsible for leaving that two-word message behind!

nice effort Alan!
finding an unknown trail on the descent is always harder. Based on your waypoints looks like you were a bit west of the actual trail into Allison gulch.

don't know current conditions, but years ago the trail up Allison Gulch to the mine was in decent condition, and I think is a faster approach than the route from Allison saddle.

Re: My First GPS Hike
Yeah, 5 second sampling is still going to miss some small movements that the 1 second sampling will capture, which will add up over the hike. That doesn't mean the 1 second data unfiltered is more "correct", however. The best estimate will be for you to collect data at the highest sampling...

the 1940 USGS map shows the trail continue past the mine about a mile, as you noted, and terminated in Mine Gulch. No marking of anything there other than a trail.

Re: Eagle Mine
Going straight up Gold Dollar ridge seems to add more of a challenge to this trek!
If you ever go back for Gold Dollar, I would suggest going into Dry Gulch and then going up the east side to the ridge. While this is annoying steep, there is much less brush and probably faster overall.
