Way off topic: new experimental unmoderated forum

I put together this unmoderated forum as an experiment. The idea is to host a forum with no moderation, no editing, no deletions, no bannings (except for egregious vandalism). A few tards have already found it. http://www.badharvest.net/ It might be another sandbox to play in for them as are interes...

High Sierra Trail hike: August 1986

My first wife and I took a hike up the High Sierra Trail from Crescent Meadow near Giant Forest in August, 1986. I brought my old 35mm camera, and recently I had the slides scanned and uploaded to Flickr. Them as are interested can see the scanned slides here . We spent the first night on the trail ...

Just look up, LOOK UP!

So I was finishing my breakfast this morning at the Side Street Cafe on Newport Blvd in Costa Mesa, when I mentioned to the waitress Kitia (for it was she) that I had climbed Mt Baldy the day before. She said she didn't know where that was. I said it's the big white mountain you can see all winter e...

Baldy Brunch, 20080628

I accompanied an OCHBC expedition to the summit of Baldy where we prepared brunch. We went up via the Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail from Manker Flats. Wonderful weather, not too hot and not windy enough for a shell. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm4.static.flickr.com/3021/2620276060_0a49f74709...

Re: Movies & hiking

Movie people never hike. They don't have a clue. I vividly remember the scene from Red Dawn where one of the characters throws an overnight backpack at another, as if it weighed two or three pounds. Bothers me twenty years later, especially as the director of the movie was John Milius, Hollywood's c...

Re: Unsettled weather moving in

I believe that is near the trail fork for Mineshaft Flat. I slipped and hurt my ankle between Fish Creek Saddle and the Mineshaft Flat trail junction, but I'm not sure at what point I removed the crampons.

Re: Unsettled weather moving in

Mineshaft Flat camp looks like a perfect place to camp. :) It's my second favorite trail camp in the San Gorgonio Wilderness (Limber Pine Bench is my favorite). The views from Mineshaft are lovely. I wish I had brought my camera this trip, there were some great shots of the weather near the summit ...

Re: Unsettled weather moving in

We only spent one night in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. For a number of reasons we decided not to attempt the summit on Sunday. However, we didn't get rained on at all.

Re: Unsettled weather moving in

Some friends and I are planning a three-day hike to San Gorgonio summit this weekend. It was off and on this week as we were watching the weather, but finally we decided to go. I only have a couple of real concerns. The first is that while there will be snow at elevation, which is no big deal, down ...

I was wondering. I bet people on other message boards have great pictures of the San Gabriel Mountains. Imagine how many different pics there would be to chose from. What is the best way to reference this topic to other sites? Try these links: http://www.flickr.com/search/?s=int&ss= ... ins&...

As my wife is a grown adult, she manages to find other ways to occupy her time that don't require my presence.

Right now she is in France.

I like switchbacks.

If I didn't enjoy walking, I wouldn't be up there.

simonov. Could you ask your friend if this is the real reason he hikes over there? http://media.podshow.com/media/3507/episodes/106918/bestofyoutube-106918-04-07-2008.mp4 What a nightmare country. Re: San Bernardino Peak Trail overnight

I have stayed at Limber Pine Bench many times over the years. It is really lovely. Sadly, I have never been there when it is clear in the valleys; the views would be stupendous, otherwise. If you would like to try overnighting (in many ways easier than day hiking) you should sign up for one of these...

San Bernardino Peak Trail overnight

Three friends and I just got back from an overnight at Limber Pine Bench on the San Bernardino Peak Trail. This is easily my favorite trail camp in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, but for some reason hardly anyone ever visits. Last night it was just us and a Marine and his wife and dog. In addition, I ...

Why not correspond with the guy? One of these days you'll end up in Japan and you'll need a climbing partner.

He seems to like the same stuff you like.

Big packs

This week, after 26 years with my old frame pack, I will probably buy a new backpack at REI. I have pretty much settled on the Osprey Argon 85 or Argon 110 (settling on a single manufacturer and model early makes shopping easier, since all the major manufacturers make good stuff anyway). What I am h...

Igloos, hunh? Have you got that "down to a science?" I went through the Sierra Club's WTC course recently. We tried to build a 3, maybe 4, person sized igloo, but it took us a long time, 3 hours+. It seems like it would be impractical for a weekend trip; you'd spend a great percentage of ...

Re: Holy cow, that's HAWT!

So, are the alcohol stoves actually worthwhile? I've heard that they're relatively low heat and take a lot longer to cook with. I've also heard they can be a little "cranky" (difficult to get to work well) and that wind really plays hob with them. They sound like they might be a good stov...

Re: Bivy bags?

I'm thinking of getting one. I loathe tents, and often the tarp is a bitch to set up and doesn't provide any protection from the wind anyway. Here in SoCal in the summer, the main thing you need protection from is wind, and a bivy would be nice for that (what I have been doing for the last 20 years ...

Holy cow, that's HAWT!

Since the cartridges are no longer available for my excellent old Hank Roberts stoves, I decided to get a white gas stove. So today I fired up my new MSR Whisperlite Internationale for the first time and boiled a couple pans of water. Holy Jeebus, now I know why hairy-chested mountaineers put up wit...
