Re: El Mirage OHV fees start Oct 1
Isn't El Mirage getting a little trashed? I haven't noticed, but then I am usually there for SCTA events, and the SCTA themselves police the lakebed prior to meets. But El Mirage is certainly getting a lot more use these days. I've been going there for over thirty years and back in the seventies, t...

You've got to wonder what we already pay taxes for Really? I thought everyone knew it's to fight wars (and if there aren't any handy we'll make some) and pay for the needs of an aging Baby Boom. Government-provided recreation will always get hind tit, that's a given, and I don't mind paying a modes...

Lots of people rip on the tourists. Are you suggesting that people cannot post positive messages about tourists? Try it... The more you post, the less coherent you get. I really have no idea what this business about the tram and tourists is supposed to be referring to, and you aren't making yoursel...

Apparently, some folks from the OCHB just got back from a trip up to Camp Muir. I'm not sure they summited, though.

A seperate "forum" or subforum for each activity here, much like we have a Tralrunning one, a canyoneering/technical one, etc. I figure if we make a total forum, it should really be "the big one", a go-to site for all SoCal mountian activities. Okay, I'll lay down some Forum Fil...

Always hated them and their snooty Newport Beach fanbase. But this article is maybe helping me change my mind . . . a little. Actually, to be honest, I don't have a lot of interest in watching grown men play schoolyard games, but watching the kids play is fun. Newport Harbor High School hasn't poste...

wonder if gairda and viriuss sink? Simonov, Wasn't that area soooooooooooo cool? Man it's really where you camped. Nice isn't it! :D Too bad your camera messed up. It was nice. Lots of horses and people visit this area though. Would you filter your water? I did, and I always assumed it was a good idea to filter lake (standing) water, but that article referenced in the other thread suggests lake water is even cleaner than stream water because the nasty stuff falls to the b...

Hey, Simonov, where did you stay in the Cottonwood area? Any good 411 for me on where to camp and all. I'm thinking of going up there over Labor Day, camping at one of the lakes, and then going up the unmaintained trail up Army Pass. To veer off topic for a moment, that's just what we did. Hiked in...

Re: Water filters
How do you deal with water on your hikes and camping trips? In SoCal, I drink right from the springs. I have been a bit more nervous in the Sierras (borrowed other folks' filters last week in Cottonwood Lakes), but after reading the linked article I'm none too worried about Sierra water, either. No...

Re: Articles on water filtering -- essential or unnecessary?
I just got back from three days in the Cottonwood Lakes area of the eastern Sierra. While I am happy to drink directly from streams and springs in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, and most of the San Gabes, I insisted on borrowing a filter for the water in the Sierras. There are stock animals roaming ar...

Why not combine the two? Years ago I used to backpack quite often with a girlfriend (we were both San Gorgonio Wilderness volunteer rangers) and as I recall we very rarely felt like fooling around after a hike, except during a few occasions when we were holed up in our tent all day during rainstorms.

I've seen the trail to Etiwanda where it branches off from the short trail to Cucamonga summit, but is there a sign for Etiwanda when you go down that trail? I want to climb Etiwanda next time I am on Cucamonga but I am not sure how to get there and whether it is marked.

I've been not wanting to go up Baldy for a while now due to the crowds. Get on the trail by 6:00. You will meet a lot of people as you head back down, but no more than 12 or 20 or so at the summit. Plus you will enjoy the hike up a lot more than later in the morning when the ridges are getting hot.

Funyan005, you have come to the right place. Most of the people on this board seem to be more active in the winter. Thanks to this board, I started winter mountaineering just this year and I love it. There are a lot of interesting local brands in the midwest. Recently Vernors ginger ale has broken out from Detroit. It's great stuff.

I remember the Sylmar quake very distinctly. It felt like the end of the world and I was 70 miles away.
I had a pet rat at the time and all I could think to do was jump out of the bucking bed and grab him out of his cage to protect him.
