Re: Mt. Baldy trails closed and another death

I was the hiker who wrote the firsthand account of being stranded on Bighorn and the helicopter rescue. Thank you for your report. It was very illuminating and introspective. You clearly learned some valuable lessons, and everyone is happy that you all made it out okay. I know it can be tough putti...

Re: Mt. Baldy trails closed and another death

I was the hiker who wrote the firsthand account of being stranded on Bighorn and the helicopter rescue. Unfortunately, I was unaware that the conditions required crampons, ice axe and helmet. Had I been aware, I would never have set foot on the mountain without proper training and equipment. I fooli...

Re: Switzer Falls Canyon Querry

I was there this weekend and hiked to the falls, no further. The trail is in great condition. The falls are a mere trickle. I also noticed that the fork to Oakwilde is no longer closed off (though I didn't venture down that way).

Re: WEBSITES - Post links to useful websites!

Hi everyone. I just wanted to share a new website I'm working on. It's a combination of a blog and an events calendar all about So Cal Outdoor Education. It's pretty wide open in terms of scope - anything that helps people enjoy and appreciate the outdoors more, though some of the first articles wil...

VermillionPearlGirl wrote: The Sespe is flowing? I was there a couple months ago and it was crazy dry. That's good news!
Is this response to a different thread?

I'd be skeptical re. much water in the Sespe this time of this year. :(

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

I do know that there was a big announcement re. opening of most Station Fire closure areas as of Memorial Day Weekend over on Modern Hiker. I wonder if that includes the Gabrielino. I'd like to hike it down from Switzer's area or even Red Box.

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

Yesterday I attempted to hike to Royal Gorge from Gould Mesa Campground. After Nino Rest Area and Paul Little Picnic Area, we ended up at Brown Mountain Dam. I searched in vain for the turn off to continue on the Gabrielino trail. I am going to attempt it again, but has anyone hiked this stretch rec...

Aztec Falls & Deep Creek

Has anyone been to Aztec Falls from Splinter's Cabin lately? How was it? How was the swimming? Also since you can't camp there (far as I know) anyone camp anywhere nice near there?

I think I will head up that way and see what it looks like. If there's no swimming to be had, I'm sure it will still be a pleasant hike.

Royal Gorge, Devil's Canyon & Swimming Holes in the ANF

I'm looking to do a day hike in the Angeles to a nice swimming hole. I don't hear much about Royal Gorge or Devil's Canyon on the boards or blogs. Has anyone been to either of them lately? Any other good swimming hikes you recommend?

That is awesome. I was just at Sturtevant Falls this week with my son and he was asking about the cabins and who lives in them etc.

Re: Best sunscreen?

I use Coppertone Sport in the blue container. It's thick and disgusting, but I have found it to be effective, especially when I get very sweaty or wet.

I prefer Neutrogena for just chilling and not exerting myself, because it is much smoother and less greasy.

Heaton Flat into Iron Fork

Took off on Saturday to just before the point where Iron Fork splits off from East Fork and spent the night. There was a considerable amount of mining activity and damage from dredging. Once up Iron Fork, we went a bit past Ross Gulch. Despite low water levels, we had to swim a bit to keep going. ht...

Interesting that you say there's no trail past Devil's Gate. I have always wanted to do the Sespe as a one way car shuttle hike from end to end.

Wouldn't it cost less to build a safe trail to the second waterfall than having all these rescues and accidents every year?
