Re: Chapman Trail Cedar Glen report

I found it a little better coming down from Icehouse Saddle in terms of the view to the other side. I put a couple of cairns in though I don't know if they were of any use.

I suspect the new trail is just going to be carved through the new use trail

Re: Grand Canyon

Hi VermillionPearlGirl We did not buy anything at Phantom Ranch -- except a cup of coffee to go with breakfast. I carried trail mix and a couple of sandwiches with me on the descent. We stopped at Phantom to eat breakfast (sandwich No. 1). I expected to do both sandwiches there but ate the other for...

Grand Canyon

This weekend myself and two hiking buddies headed out to the Grand Canyon. We began at the North Rim. Our objective was to hike to the South Rim and back. At 2:30 a.m. we headed down the Kaibab Trail. Surprisingly a group of runners passed us about an hour later. They were not prepared for anything ...

Who is it that gets up there and repairs the trails? They did a great job on Ice House Canyon after the floods. I wonder if they also did Timber to Telegraph or if that was just a new path beaten down by hikers?

Re: Missing hiker on Mt. Baldy (starting Friday 8/29/2014)

Several times while hiking up the Baldy Flat trail I have met hikers who thought they were headed down the ski hut trail. I wonder if this missing hiker made the same mistake and got into the washout area above Baldy Flat? Why these wrong turns are common I don't know. Yesterday on San Jacinto (Devi...

Re: Three T's + Ontario & Bighorn

The Ice House Canyon trail has been repaired and it is now in good shape and easy to follow. There are cairns at the point across the largest slide. Chapman has some washouts but the trail is obvious so all it does is slow down the pace a bit. It does not sound like any repairs have been done betwee...

Re: Bear Flat Trail (Baldy Village)

That's a great hike, I hope they re-open it soon. When I was on the summit right after the storm and flood a couple of guys who hiked up Bear Flat told me the switchbacks from Bear Flat to the half-way rock were all washed out. Of course the Feds don't have the money for trail reconstruction so I wo...

Re: Leave No Trace!

I was up there yesterday (Tapia to Corral) and the tape is not really intrusive. It is located at trail junctions and is on a fire road along side of trail signs. So, less like litter and more like trail markings. I don't see a problem with this. Still, if they were sporting the run would include ma...

Re: Leave No Trace!

They should put them up the morning of the race and take them down after (which I saw in La Jolla Canyon by one race organizer), or they should be sporting about these races and let the racers find their way through the wilderness. That being said, I don't really mind when I see them -- just a sugge...

Re: Mount St. Helens 8/8/2014

How far in advance did you have to get your permit? I tried to do this a few years ago and all the permits were gone. They suggested I pay $190 to have a guide take me up…not happening.

Re: Mt. Baldy Road Closures and Trailhead Access

Everything is accessible. You might find parking difficult in the Village. There are clean up crews parked there and cars have been brought down from Bear Canyon houses. The parking lot just north of the Village across from the Trout Farms is closed, but you can park along the road. If you know the ...

I went hiking in the area yesterday-- everything is open but some of the trails are in poor shape since the flood. Manker Flats to Mt. Baldy -- the trail is in great shape up to Baldy Bowl. The switchbacks to the ridge from the ski hut have been washed out, but it is easy to find your way up through...

While the circumstances superficially make him out to be an idiot, and he may well be, we don't know what was going on in his personal life that might have led him to make such poor decisions. So while his demise is explicable, it does not negate the tragedy for all involved.

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes

I think it all depends on how spooked you get by exposure. There are a few exposed spots, but they are not bad and the rock is very good. Between the first bump on the West Ridge and the Peak there was a lot of poodle dog bush last year. Does anyone know if it is still there threatening intrepid cli...
