Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

I've done it quite a number of times. The slope ain't that bad (20 degrees in a few spots, maybe 30 degrees max), its the loose scree, combined with the relentless exposure of the mid-summer sun & heat, that can make it miserable. Just stay to the right, away from the fall line of those cliffy-t...

Re: Altadena Bears 2012-05-03

Have also heard that sanctuary bears in warm, low altitude areas get sluggish during winter months regardless, and sleep for a week end at a time, don't eat much except chips, beer and pizza , watch too much sports on TV , etc. My own opinion would be the bear and her cubs visited Altadena because....

Re: Santa Cruz Driving Roads or whatever name whatever

That picture out the windshield looks to be along Hwy 101 between Gilroy and Salinas. Very llittle shoulder along that section making the lanes kinda tight, and a lot of up-and-down sections and curves that make it a little challenging even in dry, sunny weather. If you're going up there driving, mi...

Definately hypoxia/altitude sickness. Everyone else is standing around adjusting to the altitude and keeping up their 'fluid intake', while he's ascending that hill way too fast. That's enough to make anyone fall-down-drunken dizzy.

Re: End of the Adventure Pass?

The way I read the decision is you need an Adventure Pass at any location that's been developed and needs periodic maintenance - if its got a parking area, a toilet (even a pit toilet or porta-potty), picnic tables, or any other amenties that have to be maintained, then you need an Adventure Pass. A...

Good you got it back quickly. Probably just got pinched by a couple of tweekers. Usually if cars don't get recovered in a week they've gone to a chop shop and been parted out, especially if they're +5 years old.

California or Arizona license plates?

Would you know the VIN #, or any portion of it? Plates can be swapped out fast, so easier to quickly check the VIN# on the dash if I see a cool lookin' bright red Prelude  in an OC parking lot.

Re: High altitude running during the "winter" months

Thanks atomic coyote for all those details on Big bear, I will definitely put those on the list for the next time I'm up there. Holcomb sound ideal for long snowy runs. I'm also thinking maybe some of the peaks around Baden Powell. Do any of those have 5-8mi of climbing without needing serious cram...

Re: High altitude running during the "winter" months

I've got a pair of Microspikes that seem to work well for icy conditions. Never used them for running, just hiking. I can think of a few winter trails in the Big bear area, all on the east & north side of the lake. The Pacific Crest Trail from Onyx summit to Cushenberry summit (where Hwy 18 star...

Nice find on Jill Homer's blog. I saw a BBC web-article on this lady's plans about a month ago and couldn't see how it would work. Jill Homer's blog indirectly raises some issues I wondered about; mainly how to keep the bearings on the bike working in the extreme cold that's sure to be encountered d...

Re: San Gabriel River(not Angeles Forest) turtles

They're known to live in and near the mouth of the SG River between Seal Beach and Long Beach. The power plants just upstream along Studebaker Road probably help, as they discharge cooling water into the river to make it a nice warm environment.

Definately one of the more remote peaks in California. Not terribly interesting itself, but great views into the Cuyma Valley and Carrizo Plain. You could search the property records at a local San Bernardino County office in the area (microfilm or similar), or if you know a real estate agent/broker they could get you the info really quickly. If that is private property, then you'd want to find out if there's a public right-of-way easement f...

Indications that you might be a little too obsessed with climbing: 1. You’re in a math class and you find out the decimal system does not end at 5.14. 2. While on vacation you walk into a cathedral and immediately start looking at the walls for routes to get to the ceiling. 3. While walking up stai...

Jaguars back in the USA?

Interesting report of a jaguar in Southern Arizona. Nice to see them coming back. I always thought of them as a 'jungle cat' since their spotted coats helps them blend into so well in that environment (Central America through the Amazon Basin). http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/nationn ... cho-b.html ...

A two shoe solution is the way to go. In summer I've been using Merrell's Moab Ventilator mid-height shoes.
