March 5, 2020 While out in Arizona for a few days I scouted some new places to hike and settled on the easy access of 5,631-ft Harquahala Peak, the highpoint of La Paz County. It is somewhat on the way home and since it's BLM it also offers free camping which is definitely in my price range. Leaving...
It's not that they will become invasive - but they are not native to the area and therefore probably not good for the local wildlife. I have the same complaint about tossing orange/banana peels.
And they really don't belong up there along with other trash.
Actually it's just really close for me. About 15 miles round trip if I walk from home, nine miles RT if I park at the lower Wilderness Park lot. I also walk the WP a lot, just not worth a trip report every time I go there.
Because they don't belong up there either. A couple years ago it was just a couple potatoes, now I took maybe a quarter of them and there is still a huge pile on the water tank.
I walked up Potato Mountain again yesterday and brought a couple trash bags this time. There were so many taters on the water tank I couldn’t fit them into a bag. I took what I could and filled another bag with random trash from along the route. Surprisingly the trash wasn’t excessive. However, I do...
Additionally, the warming trend rate between 1966 and 2019 (+0.0196°C/year) is not radically higher than the rate between 1910 and 1942 (+0.0156°C/year). It's about a 25% higher rate, I think that's significant. If I gained another 50 pounds (25% increase) I would definitely think something was wro...
I went up Mystic Canyon and Punkout with the intention to do a little cleanup, when I was there in December there were a couple of trees/bushes blocking off the trail. However, after visiting the summit of 2760 I found out that someone had beat me to it. I still trimmed a few branches that I had to ...
Tom, I dislocated my left shoulder when I was about 27 years old. Doctors told me at the time it would probably happen again, as young joints tend to stay stretched whereas older folks snap back. Since then it's happened at least 15 more times. My right shoulder has only had subluxations, although t...
Good to hear from you again.
I had rotator cuff surgery in 2000, I don't remember that it kept me from walking.
This is a good time of the year to be out on the sunny trails!
The trail is really good. Two switchbacks have brush growing over them now, chopping about 30-50 feet off the hike on each.
This was the worst. Only a couple footprints cutting down to the trail.
There is a road junction on the south side and a shortcut to the summit. That road heads over to the TV towers about a mile away. The next ridge south has a good use trail, I wrote about it after a sunset/full moon hike last year.
It's definitely winter grass season, looks really green in all the pics.
I've never been to Henninger Flat, seems like I should visit. Did you filter water or use it straight from the source?
That gate was actually installed while I was up on Lookout in 2016. It's not clear what that gate is blocking off, specifically. The old RV park just behind the gate is private, but 99% of that road is nowhere near that area. Who will yell at you if you go past the RV park? I saw someone driving ou...
Cow Canyon Saddle has a gate across the road, in the last year there are some 'wings' added to each side - guess people were still going around to the obvious trail up to Lookout. You can see the gate in the foreground of this picture I took last Friday.
Nice trip for a gear test, I switched to a quilt last year and also recently got myself the NU25.
Out of habit, I also take my Bearvault, on top of the critter safety it's a nice seat.
I have two Jetboil stoves and since I only cook water they are great for me. One has an ignitor, the other is smaller and requires an external flame. One of the complaints I have seen about stoves is that the ignitor fails.....
I've been saying that I didn't want to do anything stupid or crowded, so the combination of a few days of sunshine and a Friday morning available led me up to visit Sunset Peak. Baldy road has some snow showing just before the Village, and Glendora Mountain Road is closed there. I parked on the stre...
January 1, 2020 Happy new year all, new decade too. Although I frequently visit snow on my NYD hike, once again this year I didn't want to mess with dangerous conditions and overwhelming crowds in the Baldy area. That led me to more front range searching and I settled on Jones Peak. One advantage to...
I went up the main Wilson trail today. Patches of snow started about half a mile below the bench, and above the bench it became more snow than dirt. (The section above the bench is north-facing.) I turned around at that point because I wasn't properly equipped for those conditions. There are also l...
