Good call, Alan. I bet you're totally right. 5000 vertical definitely seems more accurate to me, especially judging by how my knees felt the following day ![Smile :-)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)

Re: 1.13.11 mt wilson trail report (out of sierra madre)
Hey Terry- I think my Garmin is calculating elevation gained is not just ground to summit... but also includes when the trail goes down and then back up again. This way, there'd be approx a bit over 4,000 feet of the actual elevation change plus the up's and down's on the trail (which certainly has ...

Re: 1.13.11 mt wilson trail report (out of sierra madre)
Thanks for the TR. Any snow or ice left in the shady parts up high? Not so much. A little bit on the north side of Wilson road (the part where you can see Baldy clearly) but nothing that is difficult to pass. Have fun tomorrow, Ze, and let me know how your hike goes. There were like 20 or 30 guys i...

1.13.11 mt wilson trail report (out of sierra madre)
just put a trip report up on my blog. we got out to mt wilson trail yesterday. conditions are solid - mudslides are all cleaned up, tons of water flowing at the usual parts, and temps were in the high 60's all the way up. the mt wilson toll road had some damage from the storm, with a couple HUGE tre...

Re: Returning gear to REI: do you feel guilty?
honestly, i'm not sure. we have a person who works with damaged merch or returns that can't go back to the floor and i'm not sure what he does with stuff that doesn't go to the used gear sales. however i can promise you that employees definitely do not take it home ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif)

Re: Returning gear to REI: do you feel guilty?
jbowman, that's true - we are unable to resell any climbing gear that has been used... ropes, biners, atc's, harnesses, etc. the only exception that i can think of offhand is climbing shoes. it's just too much of a liability. but dont sweat it. if something doesnt work, bring it back. rei not only s...

You were told correctly, Burchey. The low heat should reinvigorate the Gore-Tex waterproofability. Glad the Taku's are working out so well!

Hey Burchey- I work for REI and we completely stand by our 100% satisfaction policy. We usually try to limit our return rates by personally outfitting people as best we can. If you want any specific gear rec's lemme know by coming on in or shooting me a message anytime. Re: the Atmos pack - it can b...

mount lowe via lake ave - 1.5.11
Got out to Mount Lowe on yesterday with my friend Victor. No snow up to Inspiration Point but a good 3-4"+ on the north side of the Lowe East trail. Conditions were beautiful to where I could see past Catalina Island, down towards Santa Barbara Island. Pretty amazing views actually, the best I'...

I just got engaged on the PCT!
After weeks of careful planning, I popped the question to my girlfriend, Laura, last week, on the branch of the PCT just north of Inspiration Point Vista off the Crest Highway. She said "of course!" as we overlooked our beautiful mountains, with Baldy on the left and Baden-Powell on the ri...

I'd echo Alan's statements. Sierra Madre, Eaton (toll road), and Chantry areh fine. However, as of a few months ago at least, Bailey Canyon had some very, very overgrown parts... but no fire damage.

North Face Mammatus shell - anyone ever use one?
I'm close to buying a TNF Mammatus. Anyone have any opinions on this shell? I'm not always a die hard TNF fan but the price is really good, its got 3 layered Gore Pro Shell, Napoleon and Pit zips, and is just over 17 oz. Seems like it's a good shell. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts.

so i have yet to meet a person who has ever gotten one of these permits, even though theyre "required" for going up to icehouse saddle and beyond. has anyone ever been asked to display their permit? or been fined for not having one?
