Re: Icehouse Saddle

HJ: nice being able to hike above the grey stuff. I live along the coast - still haven't figured out how to get above Marine Layer around here. R'Clmbr: Snow's messy and still deep enough to cause some concern - I saw some postholes that must've been waist-deep. Given the state of my leg I was more ...

Icehouse Saddle

Pretty fun day up to Icehouse Saddle. Sun out past 5800' or so and warm temps - tee shirt and shorts. Cool stuff. Finally put together a good week of training on the bike (190 miles & 14,000' gain) so I thought I would attempt a short hike in the San Gabs to test the bionic leg. It's been 6+ mon...

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

Anyone hike Icehouse Canyon today?

Thinking of doing some hiking Sunday.

Still rehabbing my leg - this will be my first hike in 7 months.

Want to keep things 'molto adagio' for this outing. :D

Swiss-made and some real nice design touches. Very tight ride and a great climbing machine. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i280/albums/kk178/obie549/SLO1001.jpg Got some years on it now ('00) but this is my daily driver and it still gets it done. https://eispiraten.com/images-arc...

Wild Ponies

Laura was out on her MTB today and came across this herd in the hills above Ukiah. Said they started following her but, she didn't stop - wasn't sure how friendly they are. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i280/albums/kk178/obie549/mendocino/wildponies2.jpg https://eispiraten.com/i...

Death Valley Camping

I'm looking for a good book, or three, which would get us started on DV camping. Weekend car camping to start, MTB's & some hiking.

Anyone been to the Racetrack Playa?

Re: Pinto Basin: Wildflowers & Burrows

We spotted about 6 large burrows in this area with two use trails running through them and what appeared to be coyote droppings scattered about. Most of the burrows looked empty (cobwebs inside tunnel and no tracks) but there were tracks up/down the use trails. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived...

Pinto Basin: Wildflowers & Burrows

We spent the second of two days camping at Joshua on foot in the Pinto Basin. Here's some of the wildflowers we spotted. First day we spent on the MTB's out through Covington Flats and found not much blooming save for a few Joshuas. The cacti on the south side are budding up and look ready to bloom ...

Re: WTB: Bike Touring Shtuff

Thanks guys! Obie, I need something for long distance touring, something to ride to the Sierra with and do some alpine climbing. Cool. So this will be a road bike tour? I been building this over the past two years for road/dirt rides. It's my old '93 Trek 720 with cro-moly steel frame, bombproof ne...

Hey Jim

Thanks so much! Glad I talked to you first. Will go with 300 degs. of coverage with alum.foil.

All I want is a hot mug of coffee and some oatmeal! Let those winds blow!

Later.

Re: WTB: Bike Touring Shtuff

lJust looking for anything solid and cheap. If you have something rusting away, not being used, and you wanna sell that thing, hit me up. Taco, I got one of those plus a bunch of stuff (need another MTB?)you might find useful. I'll be at JTree this weekend. Baldy Village the next weekend. If intere...

Joshua Tree: Sat/Sun 19-20 March Laura and I are camping at Black Rock. We're bringing the bikes and will ride/hike around Black Rock, Covington Flats and thereabouts for Saturday. Sunday will probably be south end with Old Dale Road on the menu. Monday: if the weather's not too wild we're going to ...

Re: Stove of the Week: MSR Rapidfire

Jim, What's the lightest, strongest material to use for a windscreen? I have a MSR Pocket Rocket and it appears I'm going to need some protection out in JTree this weekend. From what I can see on this posting: alum.foil, stove-top burner tray, paperclips and.....what is it that you form the foil aro...

Re: Marion, Jean, and Jacinto …1 out of 3 ain’t bad? Mar 5-6

I've watched several family members waste away in nursing homes, and I feel if I go out in the gorgeous mountains and leave this world that way, I'm not really sad about that. I'd prefer that fate. That being said, my girlfriend would kill me if I died out there, so you better believe I'm coming ba...

JTree: Black Eagle Mine Rd & Pinkham Canyon Rd.

Found a site at White Tank and threw the tent up and loaded up the 29'er for a roll down Pinto Basin Rd. to Black Eagle. Forgot how long a drop this is from White Tank - 3000' in 10 miles. I was out solo so the idea was to recon a couple of rides planned with riding buddy in two weeks. Still a littl...

Re: Roadies & Cars: another rider dies in OC

(there are no posted speed limits on the many of the public roads up there) Clearly, in the mind of a typical Newport Beach resident, that indicates there is no speed limit at all! Like the Autobahns! I stand corrected. There are two "45 MPH" signs, two "Deer" warning signs and ...

Re: Roadies & Cars: another rider dies in OC

We had an incident up on Newport Coast this afternoon. Driver came out of gated enclave at high speed (there are no posted speed limits on the many of the public roads up there) and had to quick stop as one of our group was crossing the road in front of her. Driver screams "Morons" at us a...

I took a gel seat cover thing off my old decrepit bike and put it on this one. We'll see how that works. I know I probably look like a complete noob riding a boring Mongoose mountainbike up a hill that people climb on their mega high speed racing bikes, but whatever. Really, it ain't about th...
