Re: Friday the 13th (yikes?)

Well, it looks as though I'll be doing the ridge east of Falling Rock Canyon tomorrow. I'll be arriving at Icehouse Canyon parking lot at around 6:00 AM in a green mini-van.

Re: Friday the 13th (yikes?)

Liz: Villager Peak is enjoyable. We ran out of water too early, though, which made it all the more memorable.

Ze: Dissertation proposal? I once spent a year writing various dissertation proposals. Good luck!

Friday the 13th (yikes?)

Anyone interested in either of these tomorrow, starting at 6:00 AM?
(1) Complete south ridge of Mt. Baldy, which starts a few hundred yards below Manker Flat.
(2) The ridge east of Falling Rock Canyon to a subsidiary peak of Ontario Peak.

The other side of Falling Rock Canyon

Does anyone know anything about ascending the ridge east of Sugarloaf Ridge -- that is, the ridge directly above and east of Falling Rock Canyon?

Zach: Yes, that is Whitney at the top of my blog. The photo was taken from the plateau just below and south of the Russell/Carillon Col.

Taco: Thanks for the invite, but with two little kids my overnights are far and few between.

Ontario Peak plane crash site?

I am currently reading "Crazy for the Storm", which is primarily about surviving a plane crash on Ontario Peak, and am wondering where exactly the plane crashed. Does anyone know?

After getting back home, I realized I might have had a chat at the parking with DaddyLongLegs, who was on his way up Falling Rock Cyn. Oops...hope it went well! Yes, that was me in the parking lot this morning! I almost asked if you participate in this forum, but aw shucks, I got shy. (And y...

Ok, it's official: I'm doing this on Saturday, November 7. I'll be in the Icehouse Canyon parking lot at around 6:00 AM. In case you want to join me, I'll look just like the guy in the picture on the left (without the Mont Blanc Massif in the background). If I hike faster than you, then I may leave ...

What peak is this?

From the summit of Mt. Baldy, the snowy Sierras can be seen far to the north, as in this picture: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ggE4fR11050/SvJ6baHaV3I/AAAAAAAAAEI/-8fkPn58Xts/s800/Sierras in distance.jpg There are two clusters of snowy peaks in the distance. I assume that the peaks on the right are the Whi...

Ontario Peak via Sugarloaf Ridge on Saturday?

I am thinking about groveling up Ontario Peak via Sugarloaf Ridge on Saturday, November 7. I need to be down by 11:30 AM, which translates to a start time of about 6:00 AM. I'll keep a steady pace on the ascent and might jog down the trail. Here is some info on the route: http://www.summitpost.org/r...

Mt. Baldy, complete south ridge (8/29/09)

The ridge I am calling the south ridge is the one the Ski Hut Trail finishes on. It is not the ridge followed by the Mt. Baldy Trail, but is the long ridge immediately up and west of San Antonio Falls. It has also been evocatively called "No Name Ridge" on this forum. From Manker Flat, I d...

Southwest Ridge of Thunder Mountain (8/22/09)

From Manker Flat, I descended the stream bed to the base of a scree-covered rib that ascends about 1400 vertical feet from the campground to the crest of the southwest ridge. I followed tracks most of the way up the rib, encountering steep scree in places and one wall of thick brush that was circumv...

Re: 13 days on the John Muir Trail

When I hiked the JMT, I brought a light tarp in lieu of a tent. Had it rained at night, I would have rigged a shelter. But it never rained, so I slept on the tarp every night. In hindsight, I should have mailed food ahead to one or more of the pack stations along the trail.
