Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy
With her knowledge of the mountain (everyone has indicated that she goes there every weekend to hike to get ready for the competition) I cannot see her getting lost and trying to downclimb to Dawson or towards Pine without being able to notice the high desert was straight ahead. The weather did sta...

Re: Whitney Portal - Sleeping in car at trailhead
Thanks for the replies. I ended up sleeping in my car in the overflow parking. Other than getting only 3 hours of sleep all went well. Next time I might try Horseshoe Meadows or earplugs. Good ideas, Norma. I'll try to throw a trip report together soon.

Whitney Portal - Sleeping in car at trailhead
I called the Lone Pine Visitor Center and they strongly discourage sleeping in your car and say its illegal. They mentioned the bear issue but it seems like they just want to extract a camping fee. Anybody know if they enforce this? Any recent experiences?
Thanks,
Patrick

Re: Baldy Run to the Top 2010
Hey Ze', Nice job on the Run To The Top. I hiked to the summit that day to cheer on some of the finishers (and snake a few free oranges and bananas). :) I left the summit at about 9:30 so I just missed you. One of these years I'll get some trail running shoes and try the race. Patrick (from the Grin...

Re: Not a trip report: Baldy, 30 May 2010
In case anyone wants to see conditions on the Ski Hut and Baldy Bowl trails, I was up there on Sunday, and took a few pics: Nice pics! I was up there Saturday... I noticed you have the Ski Hut listed at 8.4 miles round trip which is something I have wondered about. I have seen 4.2 miles listed as t...

Re: Baldy Village Trail Saturday 4-3-10
The mountain was kind of quiet on Saturday, only saw 3 other people on the Village trail Hi Mark, I was one of those 3 people. I actually parked right next to your van, and started my hike at about 7:30. I think I caught up with you (was traveling light) at about 9:00 and I ended up turning around ...

Re: Baldy via Bear Flat 3-20-10
Thanks for the trip report. I'm planning on hiking Bear Flat tomorrow morning. Sounds like I can probably gain 4000 ft. before deciding if I want to deal with snow and crampons. First hike of the year, so I'd be surprised if I'm up for much more than 4000 ft. anyways.

LD, I think Norma and I might have spoken to you at the saddle. if you're the guy standing next to the tree in my photo. We also met Melito Irpino (Patrick) and his friend. As was mentioned, it was a great day and the rime ice display was spectacular! My pix are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2...

Re: First time snowshoeing - Looking for suggestions
Thanks for the suggestions. Just went up Icehouse Canyon a couple of miles and then took off X-country a bit to try out the snowshoes. I'll try something more adventurous next week.

First time snowshoeing - Looking for suggestions
I've done a lot of hiking from March to November in the local mountains over the years and I finally purchased some snowshoes last week so I can extend my hiking season. Which of the local trails in the San Gabriels or other local mountains is a look place to learn? I prefer a trail that I am famili...

Mt. Baldy - First time up Bear Canyon Trail
After 20 + summits of Baldy over the years via the Ski Hut or Devil's Backbone trails, I finally gave the Bear Canyon Trail a try on Sunday. I drove up Bear Canyon Road and couldn't figure out where it was legal to park so I ended up driving back and parking in front of the Visitors Center. I left m...

Re: Best Day Hike in the SGs?
Baldy via the Ski Hut trail and down the Devil's Backbone is one of my favorites in the San Gabriels. I second Siminov's suggestion of Ontario Peak and Cucamonga Peak. The nice thing is that you can easily add Bighorn Peak to Ontario and Etiwanda Peak to Cucamonga. I did the later hike on Friday, it...

Re: Momyer to San Bernardino East Peak
Surprisingly we ran into a couple (Patrick ? and his girl partner) who were doing a loop of the Forsee Creek Trial to the Summit of SB East, Anderson, Shields, Alto Diablo and one other if they had the strength to keep going. They showed up at the summit of SB East a mere 5 minutes after we did. He...
