Re: The Most Insane Thing I've Ever Seen
It's way downstream. About one and a half hours to get to the narrows, and about 2 hours to get to the falls and the jump area (at least from where I started). Monkey Canyon doesn't officially appear on any map. It's a made up name for a very remote area, but a lot of people go there. There are rope...

Here's a great video to show you what you're in for.
Despite the graffiti it's an awesome place. (see link above)

Re: The Most Insane Thing I've Ever Seen
Monkey Canyon is similar to Hermit Falls below Chantry Flat, except way harder to get to. Lots of graffiti and broken glass, which is a shame, because other than that it's a beautiful place. Some of the guys who jump off the rocks look like Bigfoot, but other than that I've never seen any sign of on...

Gorgeous photography.
That lake isn't much to look at, but you can find some interesting things anywhere if you look hard enough.

The Most Insane Thing I've Ever Seen
This happened in Monkey Canyon a few years back. The jumper was high as a kite when he did it, and he survived, but barely. This was easily an eight story drop, into a pool that's about 20 feet deep. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i411/albums/pp195/minefinder/Hikes/Monkey%20Canyo...

Re: East Fork to Allison Mine, Allison Gulch, and Heaton F trail
The tunnel you entered from the front is the main level. There's one below that that can be accessed from the streambed, and another upper level that can also be accessed from the streambed. In addition, if you walk through the main level and veer left you can climb up and out through a side hole (c...

Awesome photos. That mine's name is Widco AND Baldora. Not too many people go there anymore. Great to see some recent shots. Did you ever find the adit? I'm assuming the rails used to switchback quite far uphill. Yes? The tunnel is probably covered over by brush. Here's what it looked like in 1993...

Re: Esme Canyon Tunnel Access Path
There's also a third tunnel if you keep walking up that trail. At that point the trail dead ends. The locked one is a water tunnel for Henniger Flats. I got kicked out of there by a fire department guy. I'd love to see the inside of the locked one. Very possible it was converted from an old gold min...

Thank you Gene. If you want to PM me your last name I'll post a credit for your photo. Otherwise I'll just use your first name. I had a feeling there was another ore cart trapped behind one of the cave-ins, but I didn't want to chance climbing in there.

Inside the lower tunnel. This mine has three levels and multiple smaller mines outside the upper level.
The wooden structure on the left is an ore chute, the catch gate is detached and laying on the ground.

Re: Secret Tunnel Under The East Fork Road
Gene, Those are some incredible photos of the Allison Mine. A lot of that stuff is long gone, so it's great to see what I missed. Would you consider allowing me to use your shot of the cabin in my website? That's a beauty. You would get credit for that photo of course. Here's a photo of an old wreck...

Re: Map of John Muir's route in the San Gabriels
Here's a part of his journal. He used to love hiking around Eaton Canyon. In August 1877, naturalist John Muir set out from Pasadena for an expedition into the San Gabriels. He writes: "On the first day of my excursion I went only as far as the mouth of Eaton Canyon, because the heat was oppres...

I've been down there before. After a cabin it starts to get progressively more overgrown. There may be some old mines down there, but it's tough terrain the further south you travel.

Re: Pine Canyon
That mine you crawled into was dug out by a guy named Bryant. It's an unrecorded mine, but I believe it was intended to be a water tunnel to power the mill, which was unsuccessful. I think Bryant used that rug to drag out dirt while he was widening the opening. You can see a video of it here. https:...

Re: Anyone ever see a ringtail?
You hardly ever see them in the daytime, but I saw a whole family of them one morning near the first waterfall at Eaton Canyon. Also saw one at night in Monrovia. If you shine a flashlight on them they'll stare straight into it until you move. I believe they're Arizona's state mammal.

Re: Area 52, Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3
Area 52 is a secret airfield and testing facility near Tonopah, Nevada, about 70 miles (110 km) northwest of Groom Lake. Many of the same aircraft that were developed and tested at Area 51 have their official base of operations at Area 52, especially the stealth aircraft.

Point well taken, and I thought of that in advance. Going by those GPS coordinates will not get you to the mine. I purposely skewed them by a few hundred feet, but I may remove that one altogether. Thanks for the suggestion.

Secret Tunnel Under The East Fork Road
While working on a mine website, I happened to find this awesome tunnel that runs under the East Fork Road. It's pristine on the inside, and I don't want it to get tagged, so I won't say exactly where this is, but it's a drainage tunnel that runs from a side canyon into the East Fork. When I discove...

Cave of Munitz
At the far west end of the San Fernando Valley lies the lesser known Cave of Munitz. To be more exact, it is located in West Hills, inside El Scorpion Canyon Park, which is a part of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. This is not a deep cave yet, rather a huge cleft in limestone rock caused by...

Re: Highest altitude for rattlesnakes?
Interesting question. I looked it up on a herpetology site and apparently Southern Pacific rattlesnakes (like the one in your photo) can live as high as 9000 ft. although they're rarely seen above 7000. The record altitude for a western diamondback was 11,500, which is amazing.
