Area 52, Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3

Found this sign near Pinyon Flats (I believe it is somewhere along road 5N044) when I hiked Bare Mountain back in 2009. Seems out of place. As far as I know, Detachment 3 AFFTC is based at Edwards AFB and was/is famous for Area 51 in Nevada. Curious if anyone knows more about AFFTC, Det-3, Area 52, etc.

Former RADAR, radio or some other type of tracking site I would guess. I looked on a topo map but couldn't find the location listed on mine.

Wacky. I thought areas were in order geographically (as in 562 next to 51).

Area 52 is a secret airfield and testing facility near Tonopah, Nevada, about 70 miles (110 km) northwest of Groom Lake. Many of the same aircraft that were developed and tested at Area 51 have their official base of operations at Area 52, especially the stealth aircraft.
