Re: Ice House Canyon Trail
Did not hike Ice House but got a birds eye view from the Bear Flats Trail. Looked like in the white stuff started about 700 ft from Saddle and was only consistent on North Facing slopes. IHC is traveled well so I would guess you could get to the saddle and Timber OK - - - - I'd be less confident on ...

Village to Village
Started hiking the Acorn Trail in Wrightwood today just after 10:00 AM. Snow started just above the trailhead and as a precaution I put my crampons on early. My hiking P did not put his on until the Blue Ridge. Below the Blue Ridge probably 80% snow coverage with last weekend's snow helping the cram...

Re: Where the heck is Mt Chapman in relation to Timber Mountain?
The backbone from the notch to the summit -is barely a spur of a spine in comparison to the spine going up Pine Mountain from Wrightwood enroute to Baldy. On the Harwood portion of the BP one would have difficulty falling in summer conditions. BTW hiking from the Village to Village this weekend - Wr...

Sorry orange county has never been on any mutual aids that I have been on. I am sure that Orange County has some volunteer organizations but my guess it might be more urban SAR rather than wilderness. Sierra Madre SAR has a great reputation and ii is relatively speaking fairly near where you live. T...

Re: Hiker missing near Mount Baldy since 2/27/2008
I live near Lake Arrowhead and volunteer with RIMSAR. I have colunteered on Mutual Aids on Baldy, Wrightwood, San Jac and even once to Bishop. So once you are on the team word gets around! Here is a link from the San Jac BB that discusses joining SAR with SBernardino, Riverside and San Diego chiming...

Contact your country sherif department or headquarters. In CA they are the ones that you work under. LA, Riverside, and San Bernardino, Ventura and San Diego have credible organizations. www.SBSAR.org and www.RMRU.org are two websites that come to mind.

I know that it might be of little consolation to you HJim but your father's death contributed to saving my life. In 03 I was recovering from a divorce and discovered that hiking was a good salve for my pain. I was in the wilderness doing stupid SH... being ill prepared and cocky. My friends even tho...

Did a very similar "route finding" hike a few years ago off of etiwanda ave adnd then up to the road to Big Tree and then over Etiwanda to Cucamonga and shuttled over to Ice House. Some interesting route finding but very doable ---- wear long pants some of that brush gets quite thick.

I have done the traverse Galena to Little SG twice and it is hike for those without fear and addicted to adrenalin or testosterone. Very cool Xcountry hike but be careful of your footing. One mis-step could be your last.

Re: Sugarloaf, Ontario Peak 11-8-07
Had hiked the reverse of this one last year and added Cucamonga and Big Horn to this list. Ice House- Cucamonga, Big Horn, Ontario, SugarLoaf and Down. That scree slop up to the SugarLoaf summit had to be TOUGH --------- going down it was almost like glisading.

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Saturday hiked the Bear Flats trail to the summit of Baldy (2h55m) and one of my goals was to scout out a X-Country hike to the summit.. My observations is that this is very doable but quite rugged. Start at Cow Saddle and follow one of the routes on the Sierra Club Peak baggers to Lookout Peak. Abo...

I still can't get over all relevant these are .......... I personally only experience MOST of these on multi - week long distance hiking. To me hiking is a very spiritual/philosophical and I have been unable to connect to that side of me unless I am solo and usually on the 4th or 5th day. One more t...

VERY COOL did you write this?
I would add
I hike to embrace "my demons" and decide to live with them rather than run away from them.

Olancha Peak OT
Instead of moaning about the SoCal forest closures decided to drive north and hit the first promient peak in the Southern Sierras. If interested in a more complete report, I posted on the San Jacinto Board.

Look Out Peak
The Baldy area can be so crowded on the weekends so to find some tranquility and solitude, I decided to explore a new area. An old hiking buddy of mine always tells me a story about how how some scientist figured out the speed of light by using mirrors from a peak in the Baldy area and Mt Wilson. He...

I was once told by an elderly but wise hiker ........... you know you have achieved hiker perfection when your uphill speed is the same as your downhill speed.
