Re: Seeding the mountain air finalized

The old LA Flood Control District used to have cloud seeding iodine burners at various locations. I know there was one at San Gabriel Dam, I recall they were not very effective. Taking a wild guess, I wonder if ground based cloud seeding could be very effective effective with the inversion layer tha...

Re: documentary on gold panners in the San Gabriels

Interesting. I used to sluice and pan for gold in the East Fork, mucho work and not a lot of gold. A great excuse to get into the woods. The comments to the article were really out there. Those worried about damage to the stream bed should visit the river at a peak flow after a good rainstorm. They ...

Thank you for posting this. May the crew RIP. They used those C-19s to drop water and fire retardant on forest fires. They used a large rubber bladder to hold the water and left the rear cargo doors open. The bladder had some sort of zip lock opening that could be operated by a crew member strapped ...

Re: A mine and a gully to Devil's Canyon

Does he publish his documentation? He does. He gives the history of the mine and documents the inside. On some of his videos he puts the general area (so in this case probably Mt. Mooney) but doesn't tell people how to get there or where it is exactly. Thanks for your response, does he have a YouTu...

Re: A mine and a gully to Devil's Canyon

Wow how funny you should post a trip report about this mine. I've only seen info about it on LA gold mines and on one other website. Neither give away it's location. I've been searching on google earth for a while now looking for the shack. I have a friend who videos and documents mines in the San ...

Re: A mine and a gully to Devil's Canyon

Wondering how helpful the wheels were in getting this thing out to this steep trailless slope. I haven't been to that mine, however I suspect they used a highline to get that compressor set there. A cable is attached attached to a deadman anchor above the placement location and another at a landing...

Congratulations on your retirement.

I too am retired and living on that other coast in South Carolina. I grew up in Azusa and spent years hiking and working in the San Gabriels. Thanks to your posts and those of many others I have been able to (vicariously) enjoy the San Gabriels again.

I knew it was there, but never visited the site. I did hike over the ridge above and descend into Roberts canyon behind the Azusa stables (Now a housing tract). Some huge mountain quail took a few years off when they jumped up right in front of me. I was by myself and it was tough going getting down...

Local politicians making money using public funds, imagine that! I do question the actual damage done to the riverbed. Any time there is significant rainfall in the San Gabriels the riverbeds are extensively rearranged. The extensive area grading resulted in the removal of habitat, altered substrate...

Brown's gulch is an interesting place. There are some ruins in Brown's gulch. They are downstream of the road crossing about half way to the spillway pond on the left side facing downstream. Further downstream there may still be some chunks of a VW that crashed many years ago. Myself and a neighbor'...

Your first photo look likes it might have been taken close to the place hang gliders used to launch. They would fly down and ride the updraft above the quarry and land in the riverbed below the outlet works. Eventually they started flying all the way down to the mouth of the canyon near Azusa. Wow,...

I would be curious to hear from the geologist(s) associated with that $1.8 billion study...
