Meh. Why survey it when I can just sketch it in? "Good enough for government work."

Yeah, I've heard that he was quite accomplished. I wonder what happened. Perhaps they were roped since both of them fell?

Re: 2017-02-04 Fatality near Islip Saddle - wtf happened?
So, I kind of get one person slipping and falling, but multiple people? What the heck? Maybe they were trying their own rescue mission after the first slip? Microspikes are great on a mostly level trail where you just need additional traction. They can however pull off if you're side hilling in stee...

Yeah, it's just awful. I've hiked hundreds of times with Lee. He was a really good guy. Generous to a fault, and extremely good natured and inclusive. It's just the weirdest thing, but I guess he fell just right (or just wrong), and that was that. Sucks. Bad.

Re: SR-39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road)
You've got to be kidding. Hwy 39 is technically infeasible unless you're going to be willing to spend a lot of money -- as in rebuilding the highway nearly every year. The West face of Mount Islip is one big land slide. Well, OK, not quite, but pretty close. It's constant rock fall along there. If t...

Note: señor Taco is going to be doing a lot of cycling these days. I'll be filling in on some of the admin duties. So, changing banners pre-supposes that I can actually figure out how to do it. ?

Elwood, so you're looking at Section 3, Township 1 North, Range 11 West, San Bernardino Baseline and Meridian (SBBM). Re: South-approach Stoddard Report and Loss of Access...!!
So each portion comes with two mules? Exactly! But seriously, now you know how they came up with the "40 acres and a mule" promise. It's based on the American public lands survey methodology. You start at an initial point and define a baseline (east/west) and a meridian (north/south...

I think I was getting confused with how they break up a section. Each section is broken into 8 portions of 80 acres each, for a total of 640 acres per section.

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions
The San Gabriel Mountains Trailbuilders might have some equipment that could be brought to bear. I know they've done some trail work in Icehouse Canyon recently, so they do get over to the Baldy area even though their main focus appears to be Crystal Lake and surrounds. Fred, who used to post here, ...

7W04.2 goes up to Pt. 9009' (The NF boundary), exactly like Jim said. Except that he misassociated the designations. 7W04.2 is actually in the ANF, and 7W05 is in the SBNF. Sean is correct. I reversed the two. I can give you my lat lon down to 2 decimal positions. You'd think I'd know which frickin...

Re: Trails of the Angeles (Throughout the Editions)
I seem to remember that the trail in Dark Canyon is pretty much gone. Def remove. Little Fish Fork isn't THAT bad, but the trail down from Dawson Peak is approaching unfollowable as is the trail down to Upper Fish Fork. It'd be nice to see a few new ones, BUT the ones we remove should be at a minimu...

As far as I know the Forest Service has not done any work to maintain or improve trails in at least a decade. Almost all trail work you see in the Angeles is accomplished by volunteers with their own tools, time, and signage at their own expense. The Forest Service pays nothing. I believe there hav...

. However, you got the boundary lines wrong it is the whole square, the northeast quarter of township 13. The boundary lines look more like this. Actually that's section 13. If you were to fully call it out it would be: NE Quarter, Section 13, Township 1 North, Range 8 West, San Bernardino Baseline...

I went up with uber hiker Joycie this past Saturday.
It looks a little denuded compared to the opposite hillside, but chaparral grows back quickly.
Tip: Don't go on a hot day. Ain't no shade nohow nowhere.
