Re: Iron Mountain (Big Iron) via Southwest Ridge

After planning this hike for a while, Tom and I finally hiked Iron via the Southwest Ridge on Sunday. http://www.gpsmountaineering.com/ironmo ... hwestridge I am going to write more of a trip report later. All I can really say at this point is that this route was very challenging. I read a trip repo...

Re: Simonov and He219's Mount Baldy Ascent, 20080209

It definitely looks more enjoyable to hike in nice weather, vs a blizzard :)

Wow, that looks like a pretty serious injury. Did it bleed much? Glad you came out all right and learnt a lesson,

we all have to remember to be careful out there,

02/23/2008 Snow safety practice from Manker Flat

Thought some of you might be interested in getting together with ODC to practice self arrest/crampon skills. There have been a few posts of people expressing interest. This is a good opportunity. If you are not an ODC member, you can join for free and only have to pay after your 4th trip. Dear Club ...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

Good info, AW. Thanks for adding it. I'm up for this sometime relatively soon, snow or no snow (prefer snow). 8) You think it would be better in the snow? I just thought it is always a lot harder and more effort exerted traveling in snow, but I have not tried snowshoeing anything like this. Would y...

Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club

I agree with Kathy. I used to hike a lot with ODC becasue of the loose, informal structure. I hike fast, and I would often end up taking off and hiking at my own pace on these ODC hikes and leaving the leader. Often I would find one ot two others who hike at my same pace as we would take off (this i...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

I revised the route to include this shortcut, it looks like it will go without too much bush. I am motivated to give this route a try once the snow clears. Here is a Topo map along with elevation profile. just shy of 13 miles 7500 ft. Sound like fun (note: The elevation profile is backwards, anyone ...

For some reason I never noticed this post before, Great video. Very well done. I love the history of this old railway, have hiked it many times. The loop you guys did was a good one. Did you notice if Ye Old Tavern campsite still had wood burning stoves for fires? I heard they were removed, I used t...

Re: Hikers body recovered from Mt Wilson

As Augie said, in the past I had led hikes with ODC, usually with a disclaimer saying that "you are on your own, I am just a coordinator". But a leader is a leader and must accept some responsibility for the group. That is why I stopped leading. I did not want to take on any liability in a...

Re: Mount Baldy Super Bowl Sunday Hike

Good questions, I had the same ones. As for Avy danager, it had been 1 week since the last snow and it appeared to have consolidated well. We asked others going up as well and everyone agreed the threat was minimal. I continually probed the snow with my ice axe on the way up and it seemed to be very...

Re: Mount Baldy Super Bowl Sunday Hike

We ascended just about right up the middle of the bowl, maybe a little to the right (east). The Topo map shows the route. We descended via the regular ski hut trail around the bowl. We had an ice axe each and crampons. We saw someone climbing the bowl with just snowshoes but he looked like he was ha...

Being Superbowl Sunday we decieded to climb Baldy's Bowl. Taco Del Rio, Augie, Tom and I all went. It was very windy and cold but we were still able to summit. Here are my photos. We will write a Trip Report Shortly, http://www.flickr.com/photos/trav_and_j ... 845211840/ https://eispiraten.com/image...

As far as renting is concerned, at $59.00/week or $8.42 per day (plus shipping), I'd rent for that price or something in that range. I guess there might be problems of availability (you, Travis, are out a lot). I suppose reservations/arrangements would need to be made well in advance. Well, all I n...

Iron Mountain (Big Iron) via Southwest Ridge

One day soon, after most of the snow has melted and the rivers level drops, I am planning a hike to the summit of Iron Mountain via Allison Gulch and then the southwest ridge. I am still stuck on the topic of these PLBs. I would be more open to buying one if I could share the costs. I read that there are no issues with sharing, you just need to update the information online with who is using the unit. I would even be open to buying one if I knew I could recoup some of the...
