Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

There is some sheltered camping at the Badly-Harwood saddle, with some trees and whatnot in a small depression. Here's a question: I never think to hit up Harwood when I'm hiking Baldy. Looking down from Baldy here in this pic, is Harwood the first or second peak in photo? I assume it's the furthes...

Re: Just another ride up GMR, and a close call.

Eh, they get paid to ride their toys. 7 - 9 MPH is where most of us are on climbs like GMR. Don't underestimate yourself man, that is world-class stuff in the San Gabs. It's as hard, even harder in places, as what the pros see in Tour de France. And we're not even talking about the Sierras. Onion Va...

Re: Just another ride up GMR, and a close call.

Taco: Ferrari's site is useful. He'll also be a go-to guy for EPO. http://www.53x12.com/do/show;jsessionid ... page=front Climbers often use a 6% grade to measure speed/ altitude gained etc. (see Ferrari's stuff for explanation of "VAM". That's the term pro's use) An amateur racer in the C...

Another cheap bivy bag ($11.00) with free shipping. http://www.armynavydeals.com/asp/produc ... me=Belgian Sleeping Bag cover Country girl likes to sleep w/o fly on the tent. I think this bivy bag should cut it for a dry nite. We bring a light mylar tarp, ground cover, thermarests and that's enough ...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

Taco: yea, the bivy is the way to go but, they're backordered and may not come in time. My choice then would be a tarp and just go for it. Laura's bike tent is low-profile but heavy (~5#) versus those jungle bivies which are 25oz. each. We'll check out the saddle area down towards Harwood if we have...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

We're heading up 11 June, weather permitting, and hope to spend a nite on Baldy. Any experiences you folks want to share about your first nite hike up there? In mid-June? Bivy, low-rise tent/tarp or nada...just a bag? Etc.etc..... Ideally, we''ll have a couple of jungle bivies and a small bike-campi...

Re: Big Baldy Loop - 5/14/11

Excellent. Rick: are you wearing any sort of brace on the ankle/knee? Interested if you would share any changes you've made to boots etc. I have started using an ankle brace (runs about 4 inches above the ankle itself) and find it stabalizes my ankle and, thus, less movement in knee. My knee has bec...

Re: Amgen Tour, May 21 (Sat) - Mt. Baldy Limited Access

Anyone got any good ideas/schemes/suggestions? I figure someone from this board would hike in from Lytle Creek Saturday morning. Didn't Elwood do that hike a while back? We talked to the lady selling lift tickets Saturday morning. The finish line will be in front of the driveway next to the ticket ...

Re: Baldy Village to Lift #4: MTB

Saturday I skipped all the hoo-haa with that roadie event. I heard there were 1400 riders for that little thing. Not to get off topic or anything, but a sight worthy of mention at Saturday's roadie event was a young lady I saw riding a commuter bike fitted with cage pedals who was wearing cargo sho...

Re: Baldy Village to Lift #4: MTB

Dave: thanks. Bear Flat? Bike? That is some stuff. Best thing I learned about portaging bikes around here is to take both wheels off and use them as walking...umm...sticks. The DBB route with a bike, especially my big-wheel 29'er, is a hassle. I prefer to chain the bike to a tree for some sections a...

Curious about your tarp: do you have a line ready to string it up should the wind start whipping? Or do you just roll over to leeward and sleep thru the weather? :)

Ze: confessin' to throwing it down to the granny gear from the saddle up.
It's doable but there has to be more consolidation from trucks, hikers.

Burchey: thanks. I dig this ride...this time of year something weird always shows it's face.

Baldy Village to Lift #4: MTB

This was to have been a overniter with a base at Manker and some scuffling around on the fire roads with the MTB. Long work week and and some sketchy weather reports left me with a Sunday to work with and I loaded the 29'er with all the gear I could manage (all up weight (bike +gear=47 pds.) and hea...

Endo was more about you getting busted up than that C'dale you're riding....tough bikes they are. That's a good ride. Kinda flat for my tastes. You doing any climbing? I'm doing Baldy this weekend. Village to Notch (if road clear) and maybe more. Bringing some gear for weight training on the MTB so ...

We had a great time this weekend in the SM's. Camped at Musch Trail Camp and did two rides/hikes. Saturday we set up the tent at Musch which called for some unexpected hiking on foot since we were told you can't take bikes up the Musch Trail (1.0 mile from main Topanga State parking lot) -so without...
