Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
I have no mountaineering experience, and have never had an experience like I did today. I started up a ridge (not knowing this was the one they were talking about), and about half way up I noticed the snow was frozen. I discovered this on my first Ski Hut to Summit try. Good to hear you didn't get ...

Re: Physical Therapy
Hey Obie, are you using an exercise bike or one of the trainers for an existing bike? I'm thinking I should probably get one or the other. Hi Rick. I have rollers. https://www.youtube.com/embed/MiCdm5FsJpg For this rehab I cut the legs down on a sawhorse and attached the front fork to same. Exercis...

11 weeks after surgery: Started walking w/o the crutches today. Wearing the boot. First few forays across the room were awkward - holding back on full pressure on repaired leg makes for slow going. Doc's assistant tells me that 'big plate in there will keep everything together - go for it"...uh...

Re: Speaking of mt. bikes & hiking trails
PS- Totally on a tangent, but everytime I've passed a group of Korean hikers on the bike (after yielding of course) they cheer for us for being able to ride the bikes on the trail! Yep, I get that too on the fire road to Baldy Notch. I also hear "you crazy?" :) The craziest MTB ride, on a...

Re: Physical Therapy
It has been 10 weeks since surgery (10" s.s. plate and 13 screws for a major spiral fracture of the tibia.) Xrays last week showed good healing, plate correctly aligned and so forth. I've started "50% weight-bearing walking", which is basically putting more weight down on the foot whi...

This has to be challenged. Completly absurd explanation from prosecutor. The DA must be crooked and has a history...or he's just begging for trouble here.
Does the prosecutor work in Bell by any chance?

Eastern San Diego County?
Hi folks. A friend of mine from NorCal is going to be in San Diego for a few days and we've decided to meet up and do some exploring out east from San Diego. This will be in January. I've never been to Anza Borrego SP, Borrego Springs et al. What would you suggest? This looks like a good start in Bo...

For a noob like me: are there flights already recorded that one can access? I'm interested in seeing Whitney Portal Rd, Horseshoe Meadows and White Mountain Rd. I've no experience with flight sim so I guess I should just practice a bit. The flight up Whitney Portal Rd. seemed to be on autopilot anyw...

Cyclical? It also seems that hiking/biking in the San Gabs is for the fit and adventurous....beyond what the 'Bottle of Wine and Chantry Flats' crowd can handle. Closing ACH and the gnarly look to the Big Tujunga area after the fire have taken a lot of cyclists out of this area. It's just too much o...

Acorn Woodpecker Community
I parked in a turnout on the switchbacks at about 5200' on Baldy Rd today. Had lunch and got the binocs out for some birdwatching. I noticed a fair bit of activity in a large dead pine straight out from my stop. Upon closer look I determined they were Acorn Woodpeckers - a small community. Beautiful...

He's showing me the 'good stuff' on Ebay for the vest only. Maybe $35..mostly used in 'excellent' cond. He has plenty of pouches from Eagle and the like, so they would be about $2-3 each and maybe a canteen size pouch for $5. I look at the pics of you folks out there on the hill and most got stuff d...

Re: Molle Vest?
. One thing I might add is that I personally don't find a load bearing vest to be as good in the mountains as belt kit is, as the vest tends to be a bit more constricting. Maybe a small chest harness would be good? SAR dudes and dudettes use them for radios. Cheers Thanks. My buddy's frame of refer...

Molle Vest?
Is it worth it to build up a day pack for San Gabs off the Molle Vest platform? Got a buddy who imports them and he has a pretty slick setup with a small pack and pouches. Like the all-around fit of those vests and ability to change things around for seasons/length of hike. Does anyone use one hikin...

Typically they close a road on race day early - around 9am. Then the only way to get in/out is on bike/foot. Palomar had a fair number of RV's on it which had camped out the nite before. Every resident/business with close access to the road were charging a hefty price for front row views. Myself, I'...

They (pro riders) have been subtly pitching the Mt.Baldy climb for a number of years. Lance Armstrong and some of this teammates have been doing that climb, the 39, and Mulholland for years. They love the steepness of the road and the cachet Baldy has among climbers in this part of the world. They k...
