I saw a video of him on the summit of Kala Pataar (~18,500 feet). I think he has forgotten about the San Gabriels . . .

Re: Baldy Bowl (5/8/2010)

If I wanted to take the regular Ski Hut trail all the way to the Summit would I still need crampons or is there a way to make it to the top using the dry land? As far as I could tell last Saturday, the ski hut trail was covered in snow from the bottom of the bowl to the summit. Some people who hike...

Baldy Bowl (5/8/2010)

Though the majority of the bowl is now dry, I managed to follow a finger of snow straight up to the crest. Here is my trip report.

Thanks for the conditions report. Looks like we've got a warm, sunny week ahead, so time is running out for snow climbing in SoCal.

Is it possible to leave nothing behind? Even if you annihilate all of the matter in your wake, there would still be empty space, which is certainly something.

Smooth rocks. Just make sure they are smooth. That's what we used on a week long Outward Bound trip.

Don't know if you noticed but I was in a tent about 200' up from the ski hut. We heard you guys come through in the morning. Yup. We kept gazing back down at your (orange?) tent for some reason. We didn't see it until we were halfway up the bowl. Was there a bivy sack next to your tent? Or a log?

Patrick Moran and I climbed Baldy Bowl yesterday, summitting at 7:15AM. The snow conditions were perfect for cramponning.

Thanks for the link, asbufra. That is absolutely horrible. I was driving up Mt. Baldy road from about 3:15-3:45AM and don't remember seeing anything out of the ordinary. The article is confusing on one point. It first says that she was abandoned just south of Mt. Wilson, then says she was abandoned ...

Cops!

Does anyone know why roughly eight cop cars were roaring up the road toward Icehouse Canyon at about 10:00 this (Saturday) morning? A cop had pulled someone over near Chapman ranch, but I'm not sure if that was related. Perhaps some hikers were ascending Icehouse Canyon without wilderness permits . ...
