Re: Charlton Peak 3.13.11

Tracie: yes, i had a goal in mind that day but i wouldn't say i was "very" disappointed in not making it. There are many opportunites to summit a mountain, but having a blast with the people you are with, laughing so hard and doing this all in gorgeous backcountry is a summit all unto itse...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

snow + hot sun during day = icy at night and that icy can last into day if the sun hides behind a cloud or in shady areas. i would not recommend Baldy at this time. maybe someone will post about Icehouse Cyn conditions. save Baldy with a 7 year old for when it melts out below the hut or for Father's...

Great TR Burchey and fun adventure! Always enjoy your narrative and photos. As difficult as mixed terrain can be it sure keeps it all interesting and never allows you to get bored. I take it you tell someone your route and when you are expected back when you go out there solo? Right? Cuz i want to k...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Frank, your photo posted on the Whitney board of a similar line of hikers is way better than mine. You should post it here. The slide in this photo closest to foreground made us take a double-take as we descended. We, Mark and I, didn't remember seeing it in the morning. I looked back at my pix and ...

Maybe you have witnessed this phenomenon, Sunday was my first experience. I had a later than usual start up the ski hut trail and when i got to the bowl witnessed my first Conga Line to the top. Not having worked on my Latin dance moves in a while i headed west (or south Taco!) since i was intimidat...

Re: Mt. Baden-POWell 2.27.11

Burchey, IMHO it is hard to call. chances are since it's only been one week. there will be areas that snowshoes will make the going easier, but you won't need them for the whole hike. so it's wear them on your back when you're not wearing them on your feet. you will post-hole at some point and maybe...

Register Ridge: mixed bag of tricks

Calicokat (Jim) and i did a hike up Register Ridge to Mt. Harwood and Baldy on the 'spiked heels of So.BayMark yesterday. We found RR below 8k weak in snow. We began in boots and before i knew it, i was front kicking steps from the snow that already had two days of melt/freeze. Below 8k it was hard ...
