Re: Cucamonga Peak - 26 July 2008
Colin Fletcher used to go on and on ad naseum about how he liked to hike naked. I always thought it was a dumb idea. There are about a thousand very good reasons for wearing clothing while hiking. Reason number one, for all practical purposes, is it's hard to find a place to sit with a tender bare a...

I'll join the chorus, it would be fun for a forum get-together, but I'm not crazy about climbing rocks.

Re: Cucamonga Peak - 26 July 2008
So, no one's got any more info on this? I am well versed in San Gorgonio Wilderness regulations, but all Wilderness Areas are different. In San Gorgonio, there is no camping within 1/4 mile of the trail, except in designated areas, so that's why I'm a little surprised to see all these informal camp...

Here's my perspective: I'm up there for recreation, to enjoy myself. That's why you will never catch me doing any bushwhacking.

Re: High Sierra Trail hike: August 1986
We did part of this hike with our scouts in Aug 2006! However, we started at Mineral King and headed south. Night #1 was Franklin Lakes. Night #2 was Little Claire Lake. Night 3 was Lost Creek Canyon at the Big Five Lakes Trail Junction. Night 4 & 5 was spent at Little Five Lakes. We hooked up ...

Sam Merrill Trail to Echo Mountain, 27 July 2008
Just a quicky, earlier this week my sister, Lynn, called and said she was interested in going on a hike. I told her to meet me at the end of Lake Ave in Altadena for a hike up to the ruins of the White City resort on Echo Mountain. It's a short hike, 2.5 miles, but fairly steep. I didn't know what s...

Re: Bear Canyon to Baldy 07/26/08
That's looks like a particularly grueling route to the top, especially as viewed from Ontario Peak across the canyon: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm4.static.flickr.com/3243/2690971895_11bdc338dc.jpg I'm looking forward to doing this hike myself, but I believe I will be doing it later in...

Cucamonga Peak - 26 July 2008
Last week, you will recall, I climbed Ontario Peak , which was lovely, and decided then and there to come back the following weekend and have a go at Cucamonga Peak. That I did, on Saturday, after being egged on to some extent by Fritz in a Costa Mesa bar on Thursday night. He said it was beautiful ...

Re: Mt. Baldy 2008-07-26
Richard, when did you come down?
I was on Cucamonga yesterday and after my hike as I was getting onto the freeway (about 1:00pm) I looked back and there was a massive thunderhead right over the top of Baldy.

Tell that to a Mexican or a Mexican American, they will disagree greatly with that definition. They prefer to be called Mexicans, and some even accept being called Latinos. You seem like an unlikely spokesman for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, but perhaps you are a man of many hidden talents. Me, ...

This is why I suggested requiring proof of citizenship, or a valid passport before entering the forest recreational areas. It is no secret that 99% of the damage to these areas is by one group. Why are you afraid of spelling out what you mean? You are trying to say that 99% of the damage is done by...

Re: Search for hikers near Heaton Flats
Oh yes, trails are good. On Sunday on my way down Icehouse Canyon, I ran into some cow and (apparently) her two hawt daughters. As I passed the cow demanded, "What happened to safety in numbers?" I didn't have time for a snappy answer, or to suggest that there is nothing remotely unsafe ab...

Ontario Peak - 20 July 2008
After two abortive attempts in the snow in December, I finally got to the top of Ontario Peak on Sunday. So far, it is my favorite hike in the San Gabriels, on account of the beautiful desolation on the ridge leading to the summit. I've been doing a lot of group hikes this year, but it's often nice ...

pretty cool you meet up with folks you don't know and camp. Until someone turns out to be an axe-murderer .. I would guess it was the GPS I linked to, I don't know how many GPS of the southwest ridge could their be? Either way, its not Travis's fault, it was very clear in the description (and pictures) what that route entailed. Indeed. Quoth Travis, "This was one of the more difficult hikes I have ev...

To get the Google Earth track, I simply traced the High Sierra Trail in my National Geographic Topo! software, then saved the track as a .GPX file. Then I went to GPS Visualizer to convert the .GPX file to a Google Earth .KMZ file. If you follow the track carefully, you can see it veers from the tra...

I saw that the woman who was lost on San G got the dry heaves. I somehow doubt it was from the water though. What would cause heaves so quickly? I think she was frightened and suffering from exhaustion and maybe other physical problems related to her ordeal. Had nothing to do with the water. This w...

Ontario Peak, 20 July
SCTA trials are this weekend, but since it's going to be so hot out in the Mojave, I decided I'd rather go to the mountains. So I am going to Ontario Peak via Icehouse Saddle on Sunday, leaving at 6:00am to beat the heat (actually, it's only supposed to be about 70 degrees). I've never been there b...

https://www.youtube.com/embed/rAOHhV1EFe4 Man that was funny, and of course true in parts. I was up in San Francisco and people were riding on the sidewalks all over the place. Ridiculously dangerous. And going through stop signs. Pisses me off. Yeah. I'm normally all in favor of cycling, and we ha...

Re: Road Rage against cyclist in Brentwood
These guys on the bikes were asking for it if you ask me. Sounds like they weren't riding single file, as we were all trained to do in primary school when we were little kids (at least here in California). We were also trained to stay off the sidewalks and ride in the same direction as traffic. I d...
