Re: Allison Mine Trail

Has anyone done this trail lately, the last posts I see are from 2014 and I see others on the web from 2009. But nothing recently. It might still be a little to warm for this one but thought I would check. I don't have recent info, but do post an update if you try it. I was there in 2012 the last t...

Fun! Ames is the bipedal-walking-robots guy, so I guess being able to walk the PCT would be a good test :)

Re: Wonders of the East Fork (Add Your Photos)

I'm not exactly sure why those mines have Placer in their titles. My guess is that those were operations that started out as placer claims and later became hard rock mines when they got some money to finance the hard rock mining. Good question. OK, that makes sense. Where did you get the names of t...

Re: Wonders of the East Fork (Add Your Photos)

Nice! Terminology question: I thought that "placer" mining referred to filtering river sediments and "hard-rock" mining referred to filtering rock you break off hard ground. But you have photos of several shafts labelled as "placer" mines. So what does "placer"...

Re: PL and P

Nice shots of the PL & P.(Pacific Light & Power Trail) That trail was built in 1911. When you walked across the red rock cliff you were just above the Horseshoe Annex Mine. Really? I've looked for that mine before and couldn't find it. Some description I read says that it's on the West side...

Where to get away from roads in the lower 48

This came up in conversation, so I did another pole of inaccessibility computation to find the further point from all roads in the contiguous US. Take a guess about where it is, and read this:

Re: PL and P

It IS a Common Poorwill! Although it will always be a Special Poorwill to me. Wikipedia says they hiss if disturbed while nesting, and maybe that's what I saw. It looked like he (she?) was puffing up, but there was an hissing thing going on too. I did a few web searches about the PL&P trail, and...

OK, so today I went up the East Fork, looking to check out some areas I've never been. Loose plan was to get up to Airplane Flat, then do some stuff. This will help: http://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=34.2832, ... 7&z=15&b=t I parked at the East Fork trailhead and booked it to the bridge. Just s...

Re: El Picacho del Diablo: an un-trip report

Sounds very casual for Big Picacho. It is easy to become lost on that plateau. And on the mountain itself. And water can be a problem on that side. Did you have a GPS and a topographical map? I guess 1:50k maps are available now, Mexican topographical maps were considered a military secret in the 1...

El Picacho del Diablo: an un-trip report

So I normally wouldn't post this, but Uncle Rico posted HIS un-trip report earlier, and mine is just so much more impressive. I want to climb El Picacho del Diablo in Baja. With all the driving, this needs a long weekend, and the long weekend we had just now seemed like it would work. The heat wave ...

Re: WEBSITES - Post links to useful websites!

Armchair explorers! I stumbled upon a fantastic archive of old aerial imagery. It goes back to the 1920s, and has many, many images, at least from the urban areas of LA and the San Gabriels. If somebody wants to research old trails, or just see what their neighborhood looked like back in the day, it...

The diamond appears right at the beginning or end of totality. It's the edge of the sun peeking through. There's probably some refractive effect around the mountains on the moon or something.

Idaho!

So I went to Idaho last week. First we climbed Hyndman Peak. It's slighly higher than 12000 ft with a ~7 miles one-way approach and a bit over 5000 ft of gain. The main route follows Hyndman creek to the saddle between Hyndman Peak and Old Hyndman peak: https://gal.secretsauce.net/travels/Idaho/DSCF...

Inside the lower tunnel. This mine has three levels and multiple smaller mines outside the upper level. The wooden structure on the left is an ore chute, the catch gate is detached and laying on the ground. Sweet! Where are the other entrances? I've been to this mine a few times, but never went loo...

Incident in question:

https://local.nixle.com/alert/6098641

I guess they were trying to climb San Jacinto, San Gorgonio and Baldy in a 24 hour period. Except they did San Jacinto first and then drove to Baldy, which is already the wrong way to do it (adds lots of extra driving)

And another argument: the search engines index public forums (such as this one) but not private facebook groups. I don't know about others, but personally, I feel strongly that trip reports and such should be available as publicly as possible.

Yeah, feasible. It's steep, but not even remotely technical. The drop-in is where you say, getting a bit easier towards Markham.
