Thanks for the report and pics.
Can we water board morons who spend gas money to drive up there... hike in and spray paint rocks and signs etc. I don't understand the fun in spray painting stuff:

Re: San Olene Goat Trail to Santa Anita Ridge and beyond?
Sean - I happened on one tobacco tin / Scoal. This was well before the switchback / just before a steep short climb where a large rock formation is to your left. No tent either. Looks like Mt Bikers like some of the upper ridge. Noticed what looked to be little jump mounts made. Some "snow"...

Burma Road (Big Santa Anita)
:?: Question -- Anyone know if this old trail can be safely navigated? Saw this (Burma Road) this listed on the Adam's Pack Station site and read about it in Glen Owens Book. Also saw it listed on the "Canyon Cartography? map of BSA. Although I am pretty familiar with the trails of Chantry this...

Re: 2/7/13: Santa Anita Creek's East Fork
Thanks B-Hammer. I figured at some point one would need gear. I will check this area out soon. Helpful to have the pics you provided. I didn't think one would have to watch out for ticks this time of year, but alas ... caught one in my hamstring last week on the Santa Anita Ridge. Thanks for the rem...

Awesome! Thanks for the description. This little side trek is on my list. Could you have gone further or was it the time that made you turn back. I imagine at some point of the canyon one needs special gear?

Thanks for the additional info Sean. Much appreciated. The info about the WC connector option and heads up about the loose area is helpful. You say loose and unstable section - Is this like" loose and unstable if I fall I'm a dead man?" :O Will probably head up early Sunday and do a loop /...

Re: San Olene Goat Trail to Santa Anita Ridge and beyond?
Thanks for responding Hiker Phil. You can definitely get to Mt Wilson from the ridge. We did it last Nov. Just follow the ridge it will take you to the bench. From there you can continue up to the top of Mt Wilson. That's great Hiker Phil --- any more suggestions / things to look out for? Any idea o...

San Olene Goat Trail to Santa Anita Ridge and beyond?
Figured I'd check out the Goat / Ridge Trail out of Chantry today. I've never been in this area before. The ridge trail is steep but very follow-able. Made my way to the San Olene Fire Road and then the water catch saucer. Explore the area a bit... weird reflector thing (what is that?), communicatio...

Re: Rubio Cyn. to Echo Mtn.: 07-22-2012
Thanks Sean. It was a lot of fun getting to Echo from a new trail. Exciting to not know what was ahead. I'll definitely do this one again. I had to look up "crux" and it's relationship to hiking / climbing. The red rope was appreciated. Was a bit concerned that the "tree" it's at...

Re: Rubio Cyn. to Echo Mtn.: 07-22-2012
Finally got out to explore the Rubio trails up to Echo. Started at Pleasantridge. My original idea was to take the Lower Old Echo Trail then loop back on the Sam Merrill. I spotted that trailhead easily, but went ahead a bit further to see if I could find the Chalet or Incline Trail. The advice give...

Re: Books on San Gabriel Mountain History
I don't know about the abridged version. It's all entirely about the San Gabes, even though titled "Southern Sierra". (The San Gabriels were the Sierra Madre before they were the San Gabriels). I would spring for the original. I think I paid about $80 for my copy. I think I will - the cop...

Re: Books on San Gabriel Mountain History
Thanks for the list! There are quite a few books there that I didn't know about! Here's a good one for you, although it's 100 years out of print. I bought a copy online somewhere, but it was not cheap. I'm glad I have it though. "The Southern Sierras of California" by Charles Francis Saun...

Body found by Brown Mt Debris Dam - Arroyo Seco
A fellow trail running buddy of mine called me this morning. He was taking a group up to "the waterfall" as many call it. He was asking for the name of the dam (friend did not know the location name) as a group of mt bikers (kids) just ahead of them said they found a body. I asked him wher...
