Started out from Manker Flats at 6:30 this morning. I put on my crampons at the register just after leavening the fire road. Who ever broke trail to the Ski Hut took a good direct route. SNOW REPORT for Friday Jan 25, 2008 update @ 5:30a.m.
We received 12" to 18" of new snow last night and it is still snowing and blowing very hard at this time.

the resorts in big bear are reporting 7 inches

Most Sport Chalets rent snow shoes for only 10 bucks, and REI rents them for 14. Its way better since you only really need them a few days a year.

Thanks a lot Doug. It sounds like I can get by with a pocket rocket for most trips. I might look for a used liquid fuel stove for more harsh conditions. Thanks again.

Anyone know at what altitude a canister stove is no longer able to function? How about temperatures at which they become weak? I need a small simple stove (thinking pocket rocket). I think the highest I would use it would be 12k or so, and maybe down to 0 degrees. I see there is different blends of ...
