Re: Baldy Attempt 2-1-08
That would be fun. Its been a few years since I have snowboarded, but I was good at one time. I don't think I will be boarding any of the chutes in Tacos picture to start. It will come back to me once I push off over the edge and get some speed. :D Maybe camp somewhere in the area so we can get mult...

Re: Baldy Attempt 2-1-08
Travis, the conditions going up were excellent, nice and firm, no post holing. I was heading up at about 8:30. It got a little softer toward the top. a 5:30 start time might have been better. There were a few areas near the rock out cropping and chute on the left that didn't look safe snow wise. I a...

Baldy Attempt 2-1-08
Started out from Manker Flats at 6:30 this morning. I put on my crampons at the register just after leavening the fire road. Who ever broke trail to the Ski Hut took a good direct route. I made good time to the ski hut and took a short break. Note: if you are using the Ski Hut or camping in the area...

Most Sport Chalets rent snow shoes for only 10 bucks, and REI rents them for 14. Its way better since you only really need them a few days a year.

Bighorn Peak
Mike and I went for a quick hike to Big Horn Peak today. Originally we were going to hike to Ontario peak via falling rock canyon, but changed our minds, not wanting to climb the first hour of the canyon in the dark. From Ice house Saddle we took the ridge directly to Big Horn, breaking trail most o...

San G Via Dry Lake
Went on a winter backpack trip to Dry Lake with ODC this weekend. 12 of us hiked to dry lake, using snow shoes most of the way. Snow ranged in depth from 6" to 2 feet from the trail head to dry lake and 3+ feet up higher. Weather was very pleasant with lows in the 30's and very little wind at c...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
I took my 3 year old son and wife up to Manker Flats today to play in the snow. There was 8"-18" of snow near the entrance to the fire road. The snow in this area was not real powdery, but I post holed with every step I took while I was building a sled run. :D Based on the conditions at th...

Baldy 12-22
Mike and I went up to baldy today. Started out at about 5:30 from manker. We took the western portion of the bowl up to the ridge. The wind was blowing pretty good and the snow in this part of the bowl was nice and hard. We originally wanted to head in a more northerly direction, but there were soft...

Ski Hut Backbone loop 12-16-07
Left Manker at about 5am and hiked up the ski hut trail. After crossing the boulder field, I ascended straight up the snow slope to the ridge. The ice in the trees above 9k feet was beautiful, but look out for the falling icicles! Not sure what time I reached the summit, but when I arrived I had the...

Re: Canister stoves
Thanks a lot Doug. It sounds like I can get by with a pocket rocket for most trips. I might look for a used liquid fuel stove for more harsh conditions. Thanks again.

Canister stoves
Anyone know at what altitude a canister stove is no longer able to function? How about temperatures at which they become weak? I need a small simple stove (thinking pocket rocket). I think the highest I would use it would be 12k or so, and maybe down to 0 degrees. I see there is different blends of ...
