Re: Baldy Bear Flat 12-27-11

This winter has been disappointing, but any trip up Baldy is a good one, particularly via Bear Canyon. Cool pics and thanks for sharing! 8)

Re: Echo Mt via 405 aka Sam Merrill Trl

I like your style The Devil does not like your style!, you chill the AB?!!! It has to be kept and consumed hot as hell if you ever want to enjoy a hellish buzz ride. The Devil admires your ability to drink the AB on top of Islip and then be able come down the mountain with no slippage..... 666 How ...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Awsome pics of your nov 13 trip ! Have not made that route up from bear canyon. Where does the trailhead begin ? The Bear Canyon (or Old Mt Baldy) Trail starts down in the Village across form the Baldy Lodge. Head up the road with the church, you'll pass several cabins and in about 1/2 a mile come ...

Re: WEBSITES - Post links to useful websites!

I really like the layout of CaliMountains, especially since a lot of us get out to other ranges from time to time... Too bad it's such a pain to transfer everything over. In terms of drawing traffic (and hopefully new users) to both sites, would you recommend we cross-post trip reports on both sites...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

If you can get up there in the next couple days, things are pretty good up top. Not quite winter winter, but definitely worthy of a trip up and an early season hint of what's to come.

Mt Baldy via Bear Canyon - 11/13/2011

I was hoping for a little more rain/snow out of the little system that moved through Friday and Saturday, not much came of it though, so we were a little concerned heading up to Baldy on Sunday that we wouldn't hit much snow. Even on the drive up (super clear morning), Baldy looked patchy at best. S...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

Wow, that first picture is incredible. I grew up in Glendora and that view looks so freaking familiar. Also messing around in Google Earth, I'd say it's taken right around where the 210 hits Citrus Ave, which is my childhoodhood. :D Out of curiosity, do you remember where you found that one? Mt Whitney - 8/31/2011

After being turned down two years in a row, this year I finally got a permit to climb Whitney. The first nine slots I filled in with overnight requests, however we were given our 10th (and final) choice: a dayhike on August 31. We headed up early Monday morning and had two hikes planned to acclimate...

Re: North Backbone - Pine, Dawson, Baldy 8/7/2011

Great trip report and pics ! Been wanting to do that rout for a couple years, what was total distance miles from start to finish ? Total distance according to my GPS was 10.826 miles. But keep in mind we parked just past Guffy, which added about 1 1/4 miles of an easy walk each way, so if you're ab...

Re: North Backbone - Pine, Dawson, Baldy 8/7/2011

How long did it take you to get to Baldy and back (car to car)? Not that it's worth much but I'd have to say this is my favorite hike in the SG. Car to car was about 9 hours, I think, which included generous breaks at each summit (45 min on Baldy alone). And I have to agree, this is now THE way to ...

Re: North Backbone - Pine, Dawson, Baldy 8/7/2011

Nice tr. One could hike up Acorn trail from Wrightwood and skip the drive on Blue Ridge road. Yeah, we were considering that route, but I didn't like the sound of 2000' extra gain/loss and 2.5 extra miles. After HikeUp described the road, we decided to give Blue Ridge a shot. It was definitely wort...

Didn't quite make it all the way to the trailhead, but parked in a small turnout just past Guffy. Doable, and the hike makes it absolutely worth it, but yeah those huge rocks and potholes galore made it pretty tricky in my poor little Civic. North Backbone - Pine, Dawson, Baldy 8/7/2011

The road up to this trail is in pretty terrible shape. It's possible, but I don't recommend anyone in a regular car drive up there. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm7.static.flickr.com/6084/6025008808_d0a31fb8b9_z.jpg Mount San Antonio by Wattifoto , on Flickr We parked about a quarter of ...

Re: North Devil's Backbone

Thinking about heading up the North Backbone route this weekend as part of our Whitney training (Whitney on Aug 31), but the only problem is I have absolutely no idea where the trailhead is... I've read Guffy Campground and/or Blue Ridge Rd, but neither sounds particularly friendly to a 2wd low-clea...

Re: Poodle Dog Bush

From what I've read, it seems similar to poison oak in that you'll be seemingly immune to it on one occassion, but then barely brush against it another time and you're covered head-to-toe in a horrible rash. And I don't think it's the flowers that get you, I'm pretty sure it's the resin and little s...
