Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
no snow in Simi Valley, but when i left my house at 4 am Sunday morning it was 33 degrees and there was black ice on the streets. KNX 1070 was reporting black ice on the 210 fwy at La Tuna Cyn Road but it was melted by the time i reached it. No regrets HJ, even Dr. George called it wrong at times. :...

As long as this means I can ride a 2-stroke dirt bike to the top of Baldy while I'm completely engulfed in flames. sometimes i wish this board had a LIKE button as Facebook does! you guys always keep me entertained! the obvious, what happens when the vehicle breaks down or the battery dies on a veh...

Re: 2.23.11 Hines Peak - summit FAIL, fun hike WIN
that was a stout objective! glad you saw the beauty of the Sespe. the hike to Hines Peak is a long one. just getting to Topatopa Bluff and back via Sisar Road is a long day. i still would like to do the drive up (or at least drive near version) where you can tag Topatopa, Hines and Chief all in the ...

Zach, you are pretty spot-on with the stats. That was one beast of a hike and everyone except Steve was complaining of pain on the way down. But we did it! We beat that Swilly Wabbitt! Great views, beautiful desert terrain and a heck of a long hike to do when most of us had already down a good sized...

sorry for the late response. gone for a few days. Tina & Zach dragged my arse up Rabbitt/Villager yesterday. epic week for my poor feet! HJ, Robert said he was making a GPS track so i will look into it for you. Santa Paula Canyon is fine. good orienteering or lots of patience makes for a fun rum...

22-mile Loop in Los Padres Nat'l Forest 2.9.11
Did a crazy-a$$ hike in the LPNF with Ventura County friends Camille, Robert and Ron on Wednesday. We started at 7:30 am at Santa Paula Canyon Trail behind Thomas Aquinas College which i thought was in Ojai but is technically Santa Paula. We traveled up the creek bed and then headed north toward Jac...

found this heading down the center of the Baldy bowl on 1/29/10 shortly after the 6-day mega storm last year. wish i could have seen him stretching his legs after being shut-in for a week. what a sight it would have been to see a black furry beast on the pristine white bowl. https://eispiraten.com/i...

CM, just took a look at this TR and the video. Wow! the volume of water has increased considerably since we were there a couple months ago. that fall you rapped in the video dropped serious force. glad to see you don the proper Diva Canyoneer footwear for this operation. i expect nothing les...

few thoughts: make sure the signal mirror is protected from being rubbed. mine is so scratched from friction that i can no longer see through the hole. i also carry 4x4 pads, though maybe that is what you refer to as gauze. i also carry a pair of chemical hand warmers, a body warmer and eye drops. p...

Tracie, there were 8 people staying at the hut on Friday night. We passed 3 of them as they snowshoed out while the other 5 were skiing down. Saturday there were no guests. Such a shame since it was a beautiful weekend. Perfect weather. Here are a few of my pix: Me with my favorite tree in the whole...

it was a geat weekend! plus the terrain and the views were awesome. 3 days in snowshoes makes for strong quads! i came home to "stuff" so i haven't had a chance to load my pix and then yesterday did a suicidal 21 mile hike in the Sespe Wilderness. hope to get my pix up tonight and get back...

Re: Rim Trail (Mt Wilson)
i was up on the Rim Trail via Newcomb Pass on Nov 1, 2009. at that time the trail was still open. we didn't encounter any trail closure signs. two guys we met at the Pass said the Rim Trail was pretty sketchy and warned us to be careful. we didn't find it any worse for wear than narrow parts of the ...

Snaggle-tooth looked fun! Nice job guys! But boilerplate ice on top in early Feb? Say it isn't so!! Who pissed-off the Snow God's? Baldy et al looked purdy from Jepson but the north face of San Jacinto looked weak. It appears SGW above 8200' is really the only decent place for snow in So Cal r...

Congrats Matt! Now that you've got that one under your belt every other hike will be a piece of cake... of course unless you start, pushing the envelope in the vein of Zé or Rick Kent. 8) I have only done Iron once and have wanted to go back since our day was in the clouds with light rain all day. everytime i see a summit photo from Sunday, Patrick's, Dave's, Matt's (on Facebook) we all look like a bunch of goons. kinda like snow blind mountaineers with really bad posture. i've been up top plenty of times with snow blowing horizontal and stinging my face, but i think the lack of visibility ma...
