Re: Sheep Again

Gigamike, Great photos of remarkable animals. I have never seen a group of males like you did. I don't think they would bother a human as long as you don't corner them or try and walk up to them. The one I photographed was probably one of the six you saw. The others were probably bedded down nearby....

Re: Sheep Again

Thanks for the compliments on the photos. Jim, I estimate I was around 30 to 35 feet away at first and then around 20 feet, not close enough to feed him grass by hand or anything. The trail was U shaped right there and I just stood still or circled around him as I passed. I never walked towards him ...

Sheep Again

The last time I saw a Bighorn Sheep on Ontario Ridge, he ran away quickly. Today I came upon one and he acted like he saw humans every day, maybe he does. The sheep was standing about 30 feet from the trail and he had no thought of moving. Eventually he moved even closer. I was beginning to wonder i...

Re: Pre Eclipse Jaunt Up Bear Canyon

I did my weekly hike up Baldy on Saturday morning, Register Ridge to Harwood to Baldy and a rapid exit off Baldy to a less crowded West Baldy. I have never seen so many people up there and they just kept streaming up as I descended. When I was cutting cross country from West Baldy to Ski Hut I came ...

Here is a picture of Cucamonga taken last Sunday from Register Ridge, May 15th. Bighorn peak is in the foreground and Cucomonga behind and above Bighorn. I don't know about crampons but there sure is a lot of snow up there.

Re: Iron Mountain info please

Yes that is the trail. Those google map images with the trail drawn in in pink are excellent. If you can memorize those or print them it will come together easy for you.
Like many trails you are traveling on a ridge much of the way and there is only one way to go unless you fall off the ridge.

Re: Iron Mountain info please

The "getting there" is accurate. If you arrive early (5 AM is my start if I am able) you will have better parking and not need to park alongside the road. I never get a permit and have never been asked for one. Once you start to hike just start moving upriver on the road and look for the o...

Here is a photo of Cucamonga Peak on May 2. It looks like it will have snow/ice for quite a while. If you click on the picture and go to original size you can see the trail in the lower right moving towards the center of the picture. This part of the trail (through the rockfall area) is visible and ...

Baldy Easter Sunday

I went up Baldy early Easter Sunday. The snow was great, firm but not too hard and dry all the way up and most of the way down. The summit was a little breezy, as usual. I had the summit to myself, which only happened to me twice before. The wind was blowing the clouds around in interesting patterns...

Re: Iron Mountain,

Thank you for the trip report. A little snow on top is good. Some places mention that you need a permit to enter the Sheep wilderness, but I have never gotten one. There are no signs on the trail saying you need a permit (like Ice House Canyon)and I have never seen Rangers in many trips. I think you...

Mike P's point is well taken. Browsing and grazing animals tend to be predictable, in the same place at the same time from day to day.

And I did get an urge for Mutton Stew while watching

Ze, I sent you a PM.

Re: Baldy on Thanksgiving Day?

I went up Icehouse Canyon last Thanksgiving. It was not crowded at all, maybe a dozen people. I think most people stay around home.

It was a dry cloudy day at the trailhead; as I went higher it started raining and then snowing around the last mile.

Nice report of a beautiful area. I envy you visiting this late when there were so few people. I think the area is not visited this late because one storm and your car stays up there until May.

I saw that sign on Sunday, but it said something about Park Imporvements being the reason for the closure. I have hiked in Chino Hills for years and maybe seen a Ranger three or four times. One thing I have learned is that those in charge just love to close the park; Rain...they close the park,...wi...

Re: Water at Ski Hut (Baldy Bowl)?

If you look closely the second spring (closer to the Ski Hut) comes out of a pipe. A hiker told me the pipe was a remnant of hydraulic mining activity; I have no reason to doubt Him. That pipe must be well over 100 years old which is kind of cool. I am no expert but it sounds like both sources are g...

I thought closing the Baldy Area because of a fire so far away was a poor decision, I find it interesting that they reopen on the first santa ana wind day since the start of all this.

Iron Mountain Last Saturday

I hiked Iron Mountain last Saturday. Iron Mountain is one of those mountains that does not always allow me to summit, sometimes I make it to the top, sometimes I don’t. I have turned around because of too much snow, too little water, too much rain, and too little sleep. I always hike alone and enjoy...
