Re: Surviving San Antonio Ridge
Yes, and look at all of the trails marked to Widco, Gold Dollar and Eagle mines. Didn't Zé put up a trail report to those mines a while back? If so, Joe, did you use those trails? Trails for Allison are good. Stanley Miller, do not follow the topo trail as it's dangerous! Trail down into Coldwater ...

Re: Surviving San Antonio Ridge
Yeah, it is weird. Depends on which version got scanned. Notice also that the trail to the Stanley-Miller mine is shown. Hasn't been used since the 1800's. Good luck with that. HJ Yeah, don't follow that one unless you want to deal with seriously dangerous crumbly rock  Stanley Mil...

Re: Big Iron from the NW ridge?
I've done the NW ridge, here's the trip report
Let me know if you have any questions. I went down the ridge (not up) but I have gone up to SM which I believe is similar terrain to what lies above it. There is decent brush in the middle section but usually you can bypass it.

Nice.
Yeah that area has been closed over 4 years now. Hasn't it "recovered" sufficiently??

Re: So how does this government shut down effect us exactly?
public (government) debt has never been a real issue (it's at healthy levels) and has always been the biggest red herring for both parties to push their agendas.
stop worrying about debt, and start worrying about efficiency & corruption.

Re: Santa Ana Mtns:Missing hiker found
Characters and moral decisions and their effects on others. The show is certainly superficially about meth production, but how in the heck you think the illustrating the dirty mechanisms involved and the fact that *** SPOILER *** basically everyone dies or is emotionally ruined "glorifies"...

Sierra Scrambling - Pyramid, Conness, Matterhorn, Morgan
Good day to all you SoCalers. No socal peakbagging lately, but I have been over to the Sierra a decent amount of times so far this year, and wanted to share a few trips. The links go to a map of the route along with all the photos geo-tagged. Horsetail Falls to Pyramid Peak in Desolation Wilderness ...

Re: any downhill hiking resources?
An interesting topic. A combination of things will help. Keep in mind on these surfaces, it is necessary to push down harder than normal, and be okay with the inherent instability of the surface (you don't know exactly what you are going to get). So you need to have good dynamic balance. Many people...

very cool (hike and owl).
sadly reading wikipedia sounds like fish & game wants to hunt these owls as they are taking over the spotted owls.

Re: elevation sickness/AMS
You have a good point Ze, but keep in mind that Everyday stays within the "High Altitude" range (5k-11.5k). This is the low-end of the spectrum for AMS. I live at 400 ft and regularly ascend to Baldy within a matter of a few hours without a problem. I have also ascended from Lone Pine to ...

Re: elevation sickness/AMS
While being a trail-runner means you are in shape, it doesn't necessarily indicate a high-level of fitness. If you are going up 3000 ft / hr for 11000 ft, you are more likely to get altitude sickness than going up 1500 ft / hr. Going uphill working at 95% max heart rate is going to make you suffer m...

Re: elevation sickness/AMS
Aside from the points already mentioned, I would say being in great conditioning can actually hurt. You can withstand going anaerobic for longer (happens more quickly at altitude) so you can withstand keeping a high vertical ascent rate. The fast ascent in altitude, combined with the high stress / l...
