Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

Hiked up IC to Timber Peak on Sunday. Trail was mostly clear up to about 3/4 mile from the saddle. There was some accumulation from there to the saddle, but usually easy to walk around it or over it (usually 10-40' across in patches) with care. From the saddle to the ".25 mile to the peak"...

Re: Neck Gaiters

I prefer the neck gaiter when it's not cold/windy enough for a full balaclava; the gaiter's more versatile.

Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club

Given that it's impossible for people to agree upon exactly who is responsible for what in individual vs group on the large scale (invidivdual vs government), not everyone is going to agree on the hiking scale (individual vs hike leader & hiking group) You're on to something there. My experienc...

Re: Hiker missing near Mount Baldy since 2/27/2008

What Jim said, and what my wife, the ER doc, always tells me. Don't f-ck with ice. It doesn't always take long fall for ice to hurt/kill you; people fall and die even on icy sidewalks. After my winter's experiences, for any trip I don't take full crampons, I'm adding instep crampons to my spring/fal...

First time I noticed this thread since it was moved in here. The photo was awesome, thanks for sharing. For me, seeing predators (especially mammals) at work has given me some of the biggest highs of my time outdoors. As a lifelong reader of zoology textbooks and field guides, my personal list of wi...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Hey Alan (or anyone who's been up to the Baldy area recently), Do you recall if there was much snow east of the parking area at Manker Flat? A few hiking buddies and I are doing snow safety practice Sunday morning. I'm wondering if we can start right from the parking area, or if we'll have to climb ...

Hey all, I put this trip together on the ODC calendar, and was planning to post it here as well, but someone saved me the time, awesome. Anyone from these boards are welcome, if you want to come but don't want to sign up on ODC, just drop me a line. I moved the day to Sunday March 2nd to accommodate...

Strawberry Peak as of Sun Feb 10

West ridge of Strawberry has some snow covering the final class 3 section. It could last a few more weeks. We went up to the last high point on the ridge before the final climb ( Fresacita , ~5,765'). There were a couple of snow patches before there, but given the warm temperatures they were slushy ...

Ah, those must've been your tracks I followed in Big Butch Wash last Saturday. Above the SAR crew practicing and the braver sledders, I spotted two sets of prints up to the bend.
