Re: Baldy Avy's 3.27.11

That looked like a great outing. I went up Baldy today. It was quite a workout with all that snow. When I got back, I thought about appealing to the Governor to declare the trail below the Hut a Disaster Area. Way too damned many post holes to dodge. Then I remembered that he has some budget problem...

The trail is closed, so no one on this law abiding-board has been on it recently. :P

Re: Places to avoid...

CA may be more tolerant, but the price of vigilantism in AZ can be high indeed. Well, in that AZ case, it doesn't pay to fund your vigilante squad's operations by robbing someone and then killing them. The actual murders were not an act of vigilantism. Correct. A true vigilante leaves out the robbe...

Bill, Look, I'm really sorry. Some people. HJ Fortunately, it melts quickly this time of year. Really, you all have me to thank for this phenomenal snow year. Since I sold the snow blower at the yard sale a couple years ago seems like we are getting some pretty decent snow. We've been doing ...

Re: Millard Falls chockstone - kablooey? (cancelled!)

What will cost more: Blasting the old boulder or the geological and environmental impact analysis? Doing nothing would cost nothing. If it ain't broke...etc. I would definitely vote for leaving it alone and not doing the studies, but my answer to the question is that the analysis will cost a hell o...

Re: supplementation for hiking?

This thread reminded me of the fact that Hicham El Guerrouj set the indoor world record for 1500m on February 2, 1997. Ramadan ran from January 10 - February 7 that year. El Guerrouj is Muslim and was observing the Ramadan sunrise to sundown fast when he ran that evening. He did admit to being total...

Re: supplementation for hiking?

its actually not that simple... True -- it's never "that simple." But rules of thumb are nice. Hiking is mostly aerobic. I used to do a lot of anerobic (and mixed anerobbic/aerobic) training (middle distance running) -- it's a hell of a lot different from most hiking! Really? I'm surprise...

if one goes at a pace of 70% their max HR for 5 hours... and another person goes at a pace of 85% of their max HR for 3 hours... is it reasonable to think that the the second person may need to eat more, citing their likely depleted glycogen stores? Re: supplementation for hiking?

Since no one else has mentioned it so far, I'll bring up the subject of not supplementing. If I am hiking 20 miles or more, going up and down mountains, I find supplements useful. For 15 miles or less, I don't bother. I carry water, of course, especially on hot days, but I generally don't eat anythi...

Baldy Register Ridge 3-11-11

It was a quiet day on Baldy. I did not encounter any other hikers until, on the way down, I met a fellow camping near the Ski Hut. It turned out that we knew each other from the local hiking message boards. Register Ridge does not have much snow at all and I easily got to the summit of Baldy with ju...

Not dissing the snow per se. Heckuva lot better than 2 weeks ago with everyone running around in flip flops and shorts. I just wanted it to snow at my house. It didn't. Hence, storm non-succeed. Sounds like it did better further east. SGW is reporting good snow. It has been snowing off and on all a...

Why not serve both masters? Take the essentials, be prepared for what you are facing out on the trails - and just lose 5 pounds of body weight? That way you will carry what you need & be more efficient as well. :) Jay makes a great point. I love the conversations I have with people who pay many...
