Re: Lighters with piezo-electric ignition

Crud. I was hoping for something more reliable than a regular Bic. Bics are great most of the time, but they're not very useful in the wind. I guess lifeboat matches would be the best in the wind. Interestingly, I was able to light my stove using my piezo ignition even though I never did get the but...

Re: Lighters with piezo-electric ignition

OK, so people are having similar experiences to mine. Sounds like JetBoil's piezo electric ignighter is better than the little one in my lighter but even JetBoil has problems when you get higher and one simply uses a bic to compensate.

Thanks, guys

Lighters with piezo-electric ignition

I was told in a recent Sierra Club class that lighters with piezo-electric ignition don't work well at altitude. I couldn't get either of my lighters with piezo-electric ignition to function this past weekend at about 8000'. At the end of the day, I drove back down ACH, and they performed just fine....

Re: Canister stoves

Went out and did Mt. Waterman (8038') this past Saturday, 1/12/2008. Brought my Esbit stove to melt snow. Results: Miserable failure I tried to melt enough snow for 0.5 L of water. I started with approx. 0.25" of liquid water in the bottom of the pot and then added snow. After using four fuel c...

cool TR, Taco. Good to see the snow is still sticking pretty well even though it's been hot.

Be careful out there on solos in Winter, bro. My pa died on one of those, and I came pretty close doing some back country skiing in '01 in Canada.

Re: Canister stoves

Excellent info gentlemen; thank you. Just to throw another tidbit into the mix: Just got back from Canada this past week. Went and did some hiking in the Elbow Falls area. Temps were below freezing but not sub-zero (Farenheit zero that is). Tried the Esbit stove that uses solid fuel cubes. Advantage...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Thanks, Luciano and Alan; my thoughts exactly. Do you guys know if they're plowing all the way to Mt. Waterman? I know they always used to when the two ski areas were operating, but I'm not sure now. I guess if I encounter a snow gate near 3 points or Cloudburst Summit, we could just start hiking fr...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Anyone been up the crest highway recently? I'm thinking about doing some snow shoeing this Saturday at Mt. Waterman. The Cal Trans site http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/sr2 says the road is open to Islip Saddle -- can anyone confirm that the road is open? They're still listing "chains required...

We married folk know that we have to take care of the domestic side of things in the amidst of our outdoor activities. Combining the two often doesn't work if your spouse doesn't like your preferred types of outings. One solution of course is to "tone it down." I hear you. My fiancee and ...

I don't if the people frequenting this board need it, but the Sierra Club has an excellent course, Wilderness Travel Course (WTC), that has an excellent segment on land navigation. I grew up with topo maps since my dad was an avid hiker. I was a Boy Scout and an Army Officer, and I am a Sierra Club ...

I went to take a look at your Google map, but I got the following message: "The Google Maps API key used on this web site was registered for a different web site. You can generate a new key for this web site at http://www.google.com/apis/maps/".

It'll be like the old (orginal) Star Trek episode with the people who are so speeded up that no one else can see them.

I think there was something that they put into Cpt. Kirk's coffee that sped him up too. Um, so what do you say we all head over to Rick's for coffee? :)

What a choice! Shot by a crazed old miner on the east approach or shot by one's own hand after miles of brush on the west approach.
