Re: Olancha Peak
Nice pics!
I look at that peak whenever I drive past, thinking one of these days I should do it. Of course summer probably isn't the best time due to the amount of water to carry and lack of same along the trail.

If it's stagnant that's what filters are for. Of course they add to your carry weight...

Re: WATER - Water Status At Various Locations
HJ, check out the Rico's birthday thread for pictures of that section - we went to Commanche Camp and all of us survived it. There were a couple pools of water near the camp but not visibly flowing so I would expect them to be dry by now. Third crossing had plenty of water.

Which one is Colver? In this pic? Here I'm standing on the little peak just south of Sunset after walking up the ridge, started at the same trailhead as you.

Re: Rubio Canyon Loop to Mt. Muir
I was on the Sam Merrill trail a few months ago, it's a great walk - nice to get away from the crowds and just hear your own footsteps and some birds.
I wondered what the old building remnants were up there, thanks for clearing that up!

It's a lot easier to park at Middle Fork than Icehouse... At that time of day you might be walking from Baldy Lodge which will also be the same mileage.

New Peak name
I blame social media which allows virtually anyone to be a hero for taking a walk and holding a sign. So I went out for a walk on Sunday morning, it was wet and misty enough that I had to use the wipers on my drive to Glendora where I arrived at the Big Dalton Wilderness Park just as the gates opene...

I'm in.
Back Abbey is a good place for a beer adventure, not many places to sit.
I could go for a Jacaranda Ale right now from CCA, have to bring your own food there.

The road in has not seen maintenance in a while either, it was easily - if slowly- passable with an old Ford Escape. The bushes are trimmed wide enough so you don't have to worry about scratching the sides of a vehicle.

April 23, 2022 I love the sound of wind in the tall pine trees. With that in my right ear and the splashing creek in my left I was on track for a pretty good day. The plan was to meet up with a friend hiking the PCT and walk a few miles with him since he arrived in Devore on Friday night. Unfortunat...

April 10, 2022 I decided on a longer walk Sunday, spending a little time visiting Mt. Baden-Powell to break up the every week routine of the Wilderness Park. It was an adventure just getting to the trailhead, as I-15 was down to one lane and I didn't know that until I was past the Sierra exit. That ...

It's good day if you return from a hike. Looks like a lot of steep up and down, miles of that would be exhausting.

Officially this is on Webb Canyon Road, the dirt part well behind the school after it branches off from Miller Ranch Road. There were more than 50 of these set up along the big uphill to the power tower, some significantly larger than others.

From what I've read the best way to use it is via bluetooth from your phone which likely has a readable screen.
Not the same but related - I have a SPOT generation 3 and it's fairly worthless in tree cover. I've even hiked northward in open areas for over an hour with no tracking.
