Re: Passin' Thru the Sierras

Day 2- I rose to some frozen pools next to the lake, and finally got on the trail once the sun warmed things up a bit. I took some extended breaks as I followed the lakes down this valley, it was great to just sit and relax next to a creek. I was a little surprised at my slow pace, taking nearly fou...

Passin' Thru the Sierras

September 19-24, 2002 I spent 5-plus days walking from Onion Valley to South Lake last month. The cool breeze every day and below-freezing nights kept the mosquitos away and the late season start made the John Muir Trail a lot less crowded. While there I crossed Kearsarge, Glen, Pinchot, Mather and ...

I couldn't find any flow there two years ago. It was early May, so it wouldn't have been dried out yet.

Re: Anniversary & Birthday Hikes at Lupine

I can't add much to the stories, except maybe the others actually downplayed the wind on Saturday night while we were at camp. It blew pretty hard for a while, then would subside at ground level for a bit while still roaring up in the trees. The view walking up to the high part of Pine Mountain Ridg...

Re: Forum anniversary hike

I am planning to come. I will already be there as I am arriving on Friday. It's a long way from San Diego. And I'm retired so spending an extra day should be OK. Looks like it's going to be cold and maybe rainy/snowy Saturday night... Bring something warming to drink! ? I've never been there. I'll ...

Re: Forum anniversary hike

Okay, what do you think of this plan? Drive to Lupine camp early on Saturday and hike to Cabin Flat and back. Spend night at Lupine. On Sunday hike to Wild View Peak and back (bonus Pine Mtn and/or Pine Mtn Ridge). How early Saturday? Map shows it about 90 minutes for me which likely means more bec...

September 3-5, 2022 I felt lucky when I scored a walkup permit on short notice for Piute Pass, so I headed north after work on Friday. Too many hours later I slept just a few hours in the Alabama Hills, waking up in time to see the sun rise and some morning alpenglow on Mt Whitney. After breakfast I...

I like that area. Definitely shady in the middle section. If you'd been there a couple months ago you could have shared in the grilled cheese fest.

That has some potential. Only problem I see is parking it on the correct slope so you can sleep level.

When I walked up to Ruwau Lake I somehow lost the trail, so I just looked at the lake for a couple hours while pondering my sense of direction. Also spent a while extracting the lens cap from my camera out of some rocks.

The rain wasn't fun but the clouds make for some great photos. Looks like a fabulous trip and you managed some higher miles. I also got a bit off-trail coming down the Lyell face, I blamed the distracting scenery. Rosalie and Garnet Lakes were my personal favorites.

True about the fires, much more to be concerned about now. I actually met jfr last year at the very smoky Kearsarge Lakes, I was heading back out and he went north. A couple ladies also turned around just before reaching the pass and I gave one of them a ride home to Pasadena.

August is usually too late for skeeters, they thrive at the end of snow melt period.
September is the best time to be out there, no bugs to worry about.

Guess that answers the question of whether you got in your Sierra trip. I would have stayed one night at Dingleberry. Just for the name. ? Moonlight looks very nice. Moonlight is a great spot, up at the end of this basin. It was very windy that day, a couple that I had seen earlier on the trail wer...

I had been planning for a very long weekend hiking out of Mammoth because I had a permit for Red Cones - well, work got in the way and I was told I might have to cut things short. Shopping around at Inyo's page I lucked out and scored a reservation for Sabrina Lake. I've walked up to Blue Lake a cou...

I've heard of it. It's really difficult - the need to carry a lot of food plus do extreme mileage and elevation on sketchy trails means a real adventure.

I liked the idea of no poles to carry except for my hiking sticks. Part of it was availability, used marketplace this was about half price of new.

Covid really wiped me out, two weeks barely moving at home and nearly a month afterward I still walk slow everywhere. Since I have a permit for some Sierra hiking in three weeks I needed to get in some training and this is an easy way to get some of that. Departed my house late Saturday afternoon an...
