The fun will start when the race organizers spot me with a big"DOPERS!" sign on the side of the road. Watch what happens when the marshalls try to get me off camera. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Re: Amgen Tour of California 2011
This will be a good chance to see professional cyclists climb. The front group of climbers will be cruising up to ski lifts at 15-18 MPH and attacks generally go out between 20-22 MPH.
Of course, all those guys are "clean".![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Wow, nice work! I like the bag setup on your MTB. That's gotta be a lot better than carrying everything in a backpack and you don't have wide load panniers to deal with. Thanks. Yea, these bags are working well. Hand-made to your own bike and bomber-proof zippers. Eric Parson's the guy to talk to o...

Re: White Mountain & Onion Valley Road
thanks. these are my first trips to the Sierras and I've been reluctant to post the pics here thinking you folks on this forum know all these places inside and out. Plus, I'm looking at a different kind of challenge on the bikes which I think pales compared to what hikers do up in the Sierras. Yes, ...

That's a great MTB climb. The looks of things up near Islip make me think it's going to be awhile before that section is safe for 4 wheelers. Nice pics.

Was doing a fair bit of training in the Lone Pine - Bishop area this summer. Both road bike and extended MTB. rides. Here's some shots from two of the better climbs around for roadies: Onion Valley Road and White Mountain. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i280/albums/kk178/obie549/...

Re: Physical Therapy
I had a Tibial Osteotomy a few years ago, and I highly recommend the pool/water exercise as the best. There are resistence exercise, and cardio which can be performed fairly early on which are low impact, and excellent for that purpose. I also recommend push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups, all of which ...

I'm interested to know about recovery exercises/programs used by people who have successfully recovered from a broken leg. Went down on 9/5 in Lone Pine on my MTB. The surgery went well and my orthopedist said things look good for a full recovery in 8-12 months. He said I'll need the boot and crutch...

There are two big amateur climbing events/races left on the calendar and the Sierras are the best place to train. Re: Lone Pine: Horseshoe Meadows
what's the toughest climb in all of the US? Mt.Washington, NH is listed as #1. Adding to degree of difficulty is the fact that it used to be closed to cyclists except on the day of the annual hill climb event. Here's a thread that's kicking around on one of the bike forums which shows the CA/USA li...

Re: Lone Pine: Horseshoe Meadows
nice! i'd love to do these eventually. what's the grade up to Horseshoe meadows? Horseshoe has a section of about 5 miles on the switchbacks that I was showing 9-11% all the way. It's a long climb too - about 20 miles from Whitney Portal Road. It's Baldy Ski Lifts x 3 = big effort. The Summerson bo...

Lone Pine: Horseshoe Meadows
I've been doing some altitude training in the Lone Pine area this month. For cyclists this area has three of the big climbs in the USA: Onion Valley Road, Whitney Portal Road and Horseshoe Meadows Road. My first two trips were (for me) high heat survival riding: 102-105 degs. It's been a slow proces...

Barrett-Stoddard to Frankish Peak and a bit more
Nice day for riding. The 2N04 fire road sections were pretty good. The trail beyond was a bit of work for MTB's. We went down the W.Cucamonga Truck Trail a ways and the broke out the hiking boots and t-poles for a stroll down the ridge route use trail. Such a nice looking house. Anyone have any info...

Re: Helmets for winter hiking: Why and which one?
There's often less ventilation on climbing helmets so that there are fewer places for spindrift to pile up on your head and freeze you to death. Yep, that's what I figured. Thought maybe I could slide thru the hot months with the bike brainbucket - my budget's lean and I don't even have my bo...

Re: Helmets for winter hiking: Why and which one?
Is it bad form to show up at Baldy Bowl wearing a bicycle helmet? I'm serious because what I've noted about the 'Mountaineering' helmets you folks wear is the lack of ventilation. I'm thinking about using a bike helmet in the warmer months until someone laughs a bit much or simply asks me to drape a...
