It's the best time of the year for Sturtevant Falls (18 Dec)

https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm6.static.flickr.com/5167/5272780106_4e3ef05cd8_z.jpg We scheduled this hike with the kids for November, but were rained out. So for December we decided to go, rain or shine. Unfortunately, the kids didn't feel the same way and we learned at 10:00pm on Frid...

Re: Running down bicyclists is no big deal - if you are rich

If the guy has sleep apnea as severe as he is claiming, his being behind the wheel of a car seems like criminal negligence. We aren't talking about some Mexican kid on a joy ride here. This, sir, is a Wall Street Fund Manager . Such people never engage in criminal negligence, and when they do, it's...

Re: Winter pants

The hot ticket for winter pants these days seems to be those based on Schoeller® softshell textiles such as Dryskin and 3XDRY . Early this year I bought a pair of REI Acme pants made from Schoeller Dryskin and I really couldn't be happier. With a set of thin long johns underneath, they keep me warm ...

Re: Basic Mountaineering Orientation - Winter 2011

The only part of self rescue in a crevasse that cant be simulated well without an overhang or some kind of drop is jugging/prussicing,but even then to simulate Jugging/prussicing,it can be done over a short overhang,(balcony etc) or even a tree. Last year I installed a metal ring in a roof beam in ...

Re: How to ice-axe self arrest

One thing I still haven't decided on is the axe-sling -- attach it to yourself (i.e. hip-belt/pack) or not? PRO: it can help in self-belay situation; CON: the axe can swing wildly if you loose it while sliding down the slope causing serious injury, but then again if sliding you loose the axe, what'...

Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy

I hate to speculate, but if the north face was covered in snow, she might have fallen down an ice chute. That north slope is almost a straight shot all the way down 2000 ft. Personally, I am very careful about wandering too close to the northern part of the summit flat, especially in winter. https:...

Taco, suggest you update the opening post to mention the two dates and different equipment requirements. For glacier practice, everyone will need, in addition to the crampons, ice axe and helmet, an alpine harness and at least one locking caribiner. We can work out ropes, pulleys, pickets and other ...

Since Zach asked for early in the month and Taco for late in the month, I am scheduling two Saturdays in January: 8 January 29 January After some basic stuff on the 8th, I would also, on the 29th, like to rope up a couple of three-man teams for a climb up the bowl to simulate glacier travel. We coul...

Cindy Abbott hiked Baldy on Saturday with a group and gave a presentation that evening at the Tustin REI. She was posting yesterday on the WPS Message Board . Nice to see she is active on WPS. When she posted on Summitpost a few months ago, all the self-important assholes there gave her a ration of...

A speedy, time-lapse trip through the disputed rail right-of-way for Metro's Expo line - currently being built from Downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Starting about 6 blocks West of Robertson & Venice through West LA to the corner of Pico & Sawtelle! Yes, no kidding - this is West LA an...

If it was her, I would expect the news people to have mentioned her successful Everest summit this year.

Re: Proper ice axe size

Also of consideration is how AWESOME you look just holding it. Try different poses, like The Lumberjack, The Rock Star, The Axe Murderer, etc. You'll find one length that works best for most situations. Color coordination is also key; get an axe in a hue that best complements your current outdoor w...

i agree with Taco. just make sure it's after the rime ice missles have stopped falling and before the rockfall begins. i.e., that sweet spot a couple weeks after a storm and before warm temps make rockfall an issue. I'm not worried about rockfall. I reckon we'll simply station Taco a few hundred fe...

Some scheduling blackout dates for me:

Can't make it on the 15th (youth hike) or the 22nd (SHOT Show).

That leaves the 8th and the 29th open for me.

I think you took SMI's anchor/crevasse rescue class last year? Do you think it's worth it? I have all of the equipment and several books on the subject and was planning to just figure it out myself. Is it better to take the class or just practice with you guys? To be honest, I think if a group of u...
