Re: Stove of the Week: Coleman Xpedition

The swine at Classic Camp Stoves don't allow hotlinking. You can see the photos, Jim, because they are in your browser cache. When you click on the links, you get a nasty "We know what you're doing!" message from Classic Camp Stoves. And, dude, Stove of the Week? That's fifty stoves a year!

Re: Summiting with out your packs

I have one other question about Whitney. They have a Wagbag that you have to take your human waste out of the area in. Is this just for Whitney Trail specific or any of the sourounding areas. Leaving at Horseshoe Meadows / Cottenwood Lakes do we need to pack a wagbag? I don't know where the wagbag ...

Here are some knots folks should practice before the glacier travel clinic on 29 January.

Re: So MyFreeForum shit the bed today

Is no one else having any problems?

I could not read the forum until I added the following lines to my HOSTS file:

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1 ads1.myff.org
Now not only does the forum work again, but I don't see any ads!

Re: Returning gear to REI: do you feel guilty?

Good point. What's your take on the antibot plates falling off for no reason. Defective or no? What about the main side seam coming apart on the pack after light use? Defective or no? The anti-bot plates falling off is a manufacturer's defect, not REI's. It all depends on REI's relationship with th...

Re: Returning gear to REI: do you feel guilty?

As a small manufacturer, I would never return anything that wasn't in some way defective. Don't think this service of REI's is somehow "free." Biggest purchase I made there that was clearly unsuitable was a big Gregory pack that must have cost a few hundred smackers. Nothing wrong with the...

Re: Basic Mountaineering Orientation - Winter 2011

Question: will it be better to use microspikes at first probably up to the ski hut you think? And then crampons? Or is there enough snow to pretty much just stick with crampons? The microspikes might be useful on the bare parts of the San Antonio Falls Road (always covered with black ice in the mor...

Re: Sports Chalet

You are right about the clothing! The new REI Tustin store looks more like The GAP than an outdoors oriented store. The store is beautiful, but it's mostly clothing now...and it's non - technical "I wanna look like I go outside" clothes. When REI first arrived in the area, in a big wareho...

Not YouTube, and not by me, but a friend sent me this link to a really quite extraordinary video of a recent Baldy climb (by Timo, whom some of you might know from the Peakbaggers MeetUp group): http://tmpix.smugmug.com/gallery/152985 ... Re: Sports Chalet

I actually like Sports Chalet, but perhaps mainly out of pity. I just don't understand how they survive. Anytime I go there (or Sports Authority or Big 5) there is never a line at the register. Sure, every once in a while someone buys a pack of ping pong balls, but I'm thinking they're making like ...

Nice photos, mcphersonm80. Just a word of warning: the Flickr Terms of Service require that you include a link back to the Flick photo page when hotlinking directly to an image file hosted by Flickr. This is easy to do using the "Grab the HTML/BBCode" menu item on the "Share This"...

I was more thinking of meeting at the Ski Hut. It might be better than waiting around in the parking lot for people to show up, especially latecomers.

I'm thinking of getting up there early and making . . . PANCAKES!

We were high on the Bear Canyon trail when they opened the road. We could see the line of cars starting up the Wanker Flat road. What a mess! Was that on Sunday? This morning, Monday 12/27 the Forest Service was turning people around at the fire station. Since the repaired road is just gravel, I su...

Yeah, because people are uninterested in facts. LISBON, Portugal – These days, Casal Ventoso is an ordinary blue-collar community — mothers push baby strollers, men smoke outside cafes, buses chug up and down the cobbled main street. Ten years ago, the Lisbon neighborhood was a hellhole, a "dru...

Ingrid and I went up Bear Canyon yesterday. I'll put a few photos up tomorrow. We learned we really need to get earlier starts (she has difficulty with that) and also I am hopelessly out of shape and need to do some training before our snow travel clinic on 8 January. We had never been up the Bear C...

No pics, but this afternoon I drove over a bridge that crossed the Santa Ana River about a mile from its mouth. Holee shit, that's a lot of water.

Since we will be getting even more rain tonight, I'll try to remember to bring a camera over there tomorrow.
