Re: Misaligned property lines

The OSM geometry comes from the "Los Angeles County Cadastral Database", so maybe some other govt agency knows where everything is. The data is here: https://dpw.lacounty.gov/general/dgn/ Looking... I pulled the cadastral data from the county, and.... it says that stuff is exactly where t...

Re: Misaligned property lines

Prior to this I thought the assessor lines are correct by definition. But if that were the case, the ranch buildings are definitely outside of their legal property. So like yall say, maybe this hasn't been worth anybody's time to actually go and fix. The OSM geometry comes from the "Los Angeles...

Misaligned property lines

We just went to Alder Creek and skirted Lummis Ranch . I wanted to get some details about the specific locations of the property boundaries, and came across something strange. Here's what the caltopo "parcel data" layer looks like, overlaid with the OSM map: osm.png Note that The location...

Re: Alder Crag, the largest unknown crag of the Angeles

Thanks for the stoke, Matt. It's contagious! The route we took on the way in worked ok, but it wasn't "good". The gully got steeper and more brushy as we descended. Eventually the brush got really thick: https://gal.secretsauce.net/travels/SanGabriels/2024-06-23--alder-creek-crag/R0006380....

Re: Post Fire (Gorman, CA)

The caltopo fire-activity map doesn't show any hot spots anymore. I guess that means that it's burning very lightly at the moment, and now's the time to go try to squash it. Probably.

Does the fact that it's a wilderness area change anything about the firefighting effort?

It's not your fault this thing is picky. Making it less picky is much more work, unfortunately. Sorry.

Re: bbcode for clickable latitude, longitude pair

I'm not sure what you mean. I just added another url-style tag called "latlonurl". So you can do this:

Code: Select all

[latlonurl=34.2209,-118.0570]Mt. Wilson[/latlonurl]
To get this: Mt. Wilson

I guess we can keep both.

Re: bbcode for clickable latitude, longitude pair

I added the bbcode to one of your earlier posts. Worked ok, after I removed the space after the comma. Definitely ot a big deal, but it'd be nice to have clickable links.

Re: bbcode for clickable latitude, longitude pair

I would guess it's something silly like extra spaces (no spaces are allowed in the tag). Making this work despite the extra spaces is too much work.

This "feature" is kinda half-assed, and that's the fundamental problem here. Can you point me to the edited post?

bbcode for clickable latitude,longitude pair

Fellow eispiraten! I just added a custom bbcode to make latitude, longitude pairs into clickable links that route to caltopo. So instead of typing 34.123,-118.456 you can type [latlon=34.123,-118.456] And you get this: [latlon=34.123,-118.456]. Clicking shows the link in caltopo, with some hard-coded...

I don't think anybody is comparing this (Taco: we need a name!) with Yosemite. But it's infinitely closer, and has infinitely more exploration potential.

I THINK I want a bivy? I've used a single-wall tent in the past, and never had a condensation problem. Was I getting lucky?

If a bivy doesn't solve condensation, then what problem does it solve?

Some crag in the middle of nowhere on the side of Hawkins ridge

This Sunday, after a nice night at Deer Spring camp, Taco, jeko1034, Ali and I went to climb a crag on the West slope of Hawkins ridge. This would be a first ascent. Taco and Jeko1034 checked it out earlier, and I don't know the details of the planning; they can comment on that here, if they want. A...

You just started this thread in the "Flora and Fauna" group. Did you want its own group, like "Flora and Fauna", but separate? I'd prefer to have fewer groups, so I'm not excited about splitting this out. Is that ok?

Roughly 14 mi, 6700ft gain or so. Terrain is rough, so this is a much bigger day than going up/down the trail on the S ridge. It's a good loop; I don't know about "best" though. Try them all!

Iron Mt from Allison mine in 2024

Some years back I summited Iron Mt via its SW ridge, approaching via Allison Mine . I haven't been doing as many of these sorts of trips as I used to, and I've been wanting to reassess my fitness level. So yesterday I teamed up with Wes and Jeff and Gautier to repeat this route. We walked up the Eas...
