Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
Hi, my hiking partner Carla and I are considering a trip up the Baldy Bowl this weekend. Anyone know current conditions? We got a late start on our 2/9 attempt (we hit the Bowl around 10:30) and turned around due to slushy/slippery conditions. Are conditions roughly the same now? We’re hoping with a...

Re: Simonov and He219's Mount Baldy Ascent, 20080209
If I'm not mistaken, they are glissading in crampons. I was taught to NEVER do this. So I'm curious: are there exceptions?
Thanks,
Leslie

Re: Simonov and He219's Mount Baldy Ascent, 20080209
Great pix and video - I love it. I think we took the same path part way up the Bowl late Saturday morning. This was our first time up in winter - we got as far as the first big rock - I guess about ¾ of the way? We were getting wildly conflicting information from fellow climbers on how much further ...

Oh my gosh, that is terrible news! Thank you for sharing - I will keep her in good thoughts. I hope she is found soon, safe and sound.

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
Hi, I have crampons and ice axe, I’ve taken the SMI snow travel course, and I’ve done some basic snow hikes. Now I’d like to explore Baldy in winter for the first time. I take this very seriously. That said, it seems like it would great fun! Questions: do I understand the trail above the ski hut dis...

Three Tees Trail (3 T's)
Hi everyone - Happy Holidays! Thinking of doing the 3 T's from Icehouse Canyon this week. What are the conditions like? Is there much snow? I have crampons and ice axe but no snowshoes. Also - I've heard about a "shortcut" on the return that bypasses Telegraph and Timber and intersects at ...

Re: The Verdugos -- Fire Warden's Grove Loop
Here is a link to the Verdugo Hills Community Hike (next weekend) including some crude maps of the area. http://www.verdugohillshike.org/ We hike this area from the Burbank side when we're short on time. It can be quite peaceful and lovely... we've seen deer, coyote, bobcat, fox and snakes. We begin...

Re: Old Mount Emma, Mount Emma, Cole Point and Mount Gleason
Hey Travis, If it wasn't for the fact that I used your trip report as my guide, I'd think we were on different hikes! I don't have anything against hunters either; my hiking partner is an avid hunter. But you might be right. Some of the trash was in piles, suggesting someone spent some time in one s...

Re: Old Mount Emma, Mount Emma, Cole Point and Mount Gleason
Did this hike on Sunday starting with Cole Point, on to Mt Emma and ending with Old Mt Emma. There was a kind of beauty in the barren rolling mountaintops and even the burned area drew me in. But boy the ups and downs on this hike will break your heart! I think the mental toll was worse than the phy...

Re: What's a good way to measure hiking performance?
Yes, I am definitely on the slow side so I have to carry more food, water and clothing, etc. At one point I tried to improve my speed but nothing much changed and so it only took the fun out of it for me. My speed is pretty much set - and I’m very fortunate to have a hiking partner with a very simil...

Re: Old Mount Emma, Mount Emma, Cole Point and Mount Gleason
Thanks for the response! Unfortunately I do not have GPS (yet) and my tom harrison doesn't help much. A TOPO would be great. What if I began the hike at mile marker 6.88, attaining Cole first, then on to the Emmas? Would route finding be easier? How does that affect the elevation gain?

Re: Old Mount Emma, Mount Emma, Cole Point and Mount Gleason
Hi Travis, Thanks for the report. These peaks are also on my list and you've inspired me to get out there this weekend. I'm unfamiliar with the area so I find myself making some assumptions - which can be foolish. The great thing about this board is I can ask advice or someone who's been there! So, ...

Re: Mt Baldy Pine and Dawson on Oct 13
Outdoors Club says this hike is 14 miles with 6200' gain from Manker Flat and the Ski Hut Trail and down via the notch - is that accurate? I would have guessed it longer. I'd actually like to do this hike from Wrightwood; waiting for a nice cool day.
