Re: 2023 Pacific Coast Bicycle Race 1500 - Portland to San Diego

That's incredible, Ryan! I was following the dot every day, wondering if you would ever run out of steam. Massive effort. Let's go ride the Mojave Road!

Re: The San Gabriel Mountains geographical centroid

I would do it from topography. You can get a surface mesh from USGS (the SRTM data), or a higher-res thing from the county. The "mountains" can be defined as the region with a non-constant-ish gradient high-ish gradient (i.e. anything not flat). Then you start in the middle, and find the l...

There isn't anything wrong with Firefox. By switching to a new browser you have effectively cleared your cookies (since each browser has its own set), which worked around tapatalk's bug: they changed something so that their own cookie confuse them. Go back to firefox, delete tapatalk's cookies, and ...

HikeUp: you can login on your computer, but not the phone. May I assume that you usually use the phone, and use the computer to log-in to tapatalk approximately never, until it broke just now, and you tried it?

Certainly before Internet. I knew those names when I was in Scouts, early to mid 1980s.

Re: Baldy Water Slide

For those not yet aware, the MRCA owns that pullout across from Barret Stoddard rd. That's all they own. Just that little pullout. And the way the use that tiny bit of land is to put up no-parking signs, and then to patrol that one pullout to write tickets. Bleh.

Did Baldy today and the west side of the road has all no parking signs now near Barett-Stoddard Road but people parked there anyway and they were giving out lotsa tickets, cha-ching. That pisses me off so much. At least there's good signage now? Pop quiz: who's the "they" that are giving ...

That is excellent! It took me years to get up to Wilson and Baldy since I was working on finishing everything else closer. I wasn't quite as thorough with the mapping as you, but the rationale was similar I think. Haven't been up to Whitney yet, and I'm not almost there :)

Thanks for the report. I've never been to the falls, but I've taken the trail around them several times. Each time I'm shocked it's still there. How far past the trail are the falls?

HikeUp: the water tank on the ridge towards the right of your photo is the West end of Barley Flats. The same tank is visible in one of courtney's photos. I still don't see it in your photo, though. It might be just out of view, or maybe behind something, since it's a very different angle.

Thanks for the idea. It seems unlikely to me because it would make what would already be a challenging trip much more challenging: - Much longer-than-usual approach - In the heat - On a new, untried route It sounds like SAR has clues about where to look, but they haven't found a trace of him. So who...
