For those of you who must make your jokes, please go right ahead and get it out of your system.

Finished? Ok - I stumbled upon this guy on Reddit years ago but now I see he has made a whole proper website.

Peak Jut is super cool and I think a meaningful way to measure the general rad-ness of topography.
The website explains what the whole concept is and how it is calculated, including how it differs from prominence. I personally think it is more useful then prominence, because the way prominence values isolation is not quite as meaningful to me as elevation rise over a distance.

FYI the peak with the most Jut in the San Gabriels is Iron Mountain by a fair margin - I think that feels valid?

The interactive map is super cool, allowing you to calculate the "Jut" of any location, and features a "Jut" layer.

I've been following the jut discussion and jokes on /r/mountaineering for a while. It's a cool concept, but the jut dude takes a lot of flak.

Huge fan once Nate turned me into it a few months ago! I wish more peaks were recognized on there. I feel like they only recognize peaks with a wiki and exclude OSM ones

But with the interactive map you can calculate from any point on earth!!! I.... may be in the process of doing so for my life list...

Yes, because "Jut" takes into consideration the slope, or steepness, from a point at the base of the mountain to the point you are measuring the "Jut" of. Vertical Rise is only a measurement of difference in elevation, with no consideration of steepness.

Well it took me 8 months, but I calculated the jut of a spot of my choosing along all 673 hikes on my life list. Sometimes it's the highest point, sometimes it's just a point of defining interest along the route, and in a couple special occasions it is the "jut-iest" point along the route.

Here are my top 10 most juttiest-jutters:

#1 Harden Lake 1555 - in NO WAY expected this, but turns out the rim of Hetch-hetchy valley was not far from where my father and I camped on this lake 2018 in Yosemite NP. We didn't even have a view!! The Sierra always brings the x-factor.

No big surprise, this one will forever loom large in my history books. FYI the jut is calculated from Allen Peak, one of 7 we hit that day. What makes it all REALLY count is the base point at the mouth of Taylor Canyon we also hiked along on our way up that morning! Thats when you know you've eared your jut.

The Jut is actually calculated not from the venerable Neight Thousand but rather Middle Hawkins, my highpoint along the route.

My first Piraten hike, and to the highest point visible from where I live: San Gabriel Peak. If I remember correctly I think the base is in the Arroyo Seco.

#8 The Big Red Ceremony 1263 This was on a hiking road trip my father and I did in 2010 through Texas and New Mexico. This jut is calculated from the summit of Lookout Mountain, right next to Sierra Blanca peak. We were trying for Sierra Blanca but because of weather only made it to Lookout.

#9 The South Rim of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend national park 1207
This was on that same hiking roadtrip in 2010. My father and I camped up there. And were swarmed by border patrol on a different night.

Interestingly, Josephine Peak has a lot more jut then Strawberry Peak does, because its a straight shot down to a base point on the Tujunga with Josephine, but not Strawberry.

When I calculated the jut of Neight Thousand, I got a score of 12736. I think Neight Thousand is miscalculated on your scale cuz I see that peak jut-ing up everywhere, whether I'm in bear creek or Millard Canyon. The peak is so massive and so so distinguished from it's surroundings

That sounds about right. I didn't include it in my rankings list here because it would be unfair to all the other mountains.
