Me and my cousin Evil Jim decided to go hiking on Good Friday. I only had time for a half day hike as we had heard all the trails in BSA were open but apparently that was not the case. We planned on the Mt. Zion Loop, when we got to Hoegee's camground we saw a sign saying that the trail was still closed even though people may have heard that it was open. That was kind of cruel. The trail to Hoegee's was in good shape except a narrow section right before you drop into the canyon. The canyon used to be very well forested but now is wide open.
I told Evil Jim that I couldn't in good conscience hike that trail but Evil Jim is an entitled Bel Air snot kid similar to the Menendez brothers except he didn't kill his parents. He also uses the word "stoke" a lot coincidence, I dunno. He decided to hike the trail, here is his retelling of the condition of the trail. You immediately come to a section of trail where they are still working on getting over a dry waterfall however there is a bypass by going into the creek and there are some narrow switchbacks to get back on to the main trail. From there the trail varies between rough and well groomed with lots of rocks and growth encroaching on the trail. The hike up is steep and sometimes a bit narrow but all manageable. The backside doesn't have the growth and still has plenty of trees to keep things shaded. There were numerous trees that fell on the trail but all have been sawed through. There is no reason for this section of the trail to still be closed. The trail to Newcomb Pass is open and the trail is now rerouted through Sturtevant Camp. Evil Jim saw some mules going up the trail to replenish the camp with what looked like fuel canisters.
Anyway wait until the trail is open, don't be evil especially on Good Friday and let's all pray for Zion.
