I spent four days in Bishop during the 4th of July weekend with one of my hiking friends. My plan was to take advantage of every minute spent in the Eastern Sierras. As soon as we arrived on Friday afternoon, we drove straight to the Mosquito Flats Trailhead to do the Little Lakes to Gem Lakes Loop. Since we got a late start we did a smaller loop. Hiking around Mack, Marsh, Heart, and Box lake. The weather was nice with a few people on the trails.

We did a reverse loop going left over the bridge from the parking lot then descending the Little Lakes Valley trail. The trail gets sort of lost with all the rockfall and the tall, grassy marsh but you can still follow a narrow path along Mack Lake. We had to scramble over some rocks then the trail became clear again as we approached Marsh Lake and headed towards the main trail to complete the loop.

On the descent, we passed the junction where you can go up to Mono Pass. I did this a few years ago so I had no interest in doing it again. Starting at 10,000 ft was a great start for my high elevation training.

Box lake is as far as you went on the trail? I've been there a few times, best place to take people as an introduction to the Sierras.

Jeff- yes I only went as far as Box Lake. Just because we had plans for a longer hike the next day.
