Pasadena Star-News. 1957/6/30. Describes the in-progress and not-yet-abandoned road to Vincent Gap high above the East Fork. At article time, they were cutting the first tunnel. The plans were grand, and the whole project was supposed to take 20 years. I also like the full-page leading photo.
Old newspaper article of the day! Shoemaker canyon road
Lol yeah, bore a tunnel straight after tunnel 2 down to Phelan. That would be sick.
I always wonder what their plans were. It's really tough after tunnel 2. I assumed they would make another one through the east ridge of Rattlesnake, then a bridge over Iron Fork, then maybe another tunnel through Baden Powell to connect to Bighorn Mine? Then maybe pave down to Valyermo. Pretty glad that didn't happen. Iron and Fish forks are still nice because not many humans have it in em to go there. Hindsight or whatever.
