I believe this is a southern alligator lizard. We found it on the trail to Occidental Peak.

We have those in our yard sometimes (Pasadena). One was over 12" once.

These were huge - the first one I glimpsed as I walked past was so big my initial thought was snake.
"Argue for your limitations and sure enough they're yours".
